I use exclusively my ear. It takes longer but I make adjustments in the mix and how I route devices. Gotta have good samples to begin with though for that to work.

I'm still learning so I could be doing it wrong.

Re: Help me make music: Part 3

I use mostly UAD1 plugs and logic plugs. On occassion some rare one off plugs.

While I agree you should know how to use a compressor before you go jacking with one, I don't agree with not using compressors at all.

I use compression of some sort on almost everything, but I DO know how to use a compressor.

Re: Help me make music: Part 3

This could be off topic or not. after reading this to me if seems like you are looking or searching for some set of rules, guidelines on creating music. you don't need a shit load of gadgets, sounds, plug-ins, software, magazines in order for your music to sound right. instead of collecting all that material, i would just sit there, listen and optimize what you have infront of you. getting help on how-to do some thing is helpful but it aint going to make you creative.
i think this would help you out with what your seeking towards. just listen to what you're creating.

Not all but most. Theres lots of classically trained electronic artists. I, personally know alot of people who made electronic music cause they could never learn how to use a guitar. Thats all.

Re: Help me make music: Part 3

Lemme rephrase.... I use compressors just as much as the next guy. Alot of people, especially people starting out dont have the experience in the studio to fully understand what a compressor does and how it affects your soundscape sonically. Alot of people add and add and add which in essence is compiling harmonic dissonance atop more harmonic dissonance. I found the best mixes come from a subtractive point of view.

Most people dont take into account full linear translation, system to system variation and things like that. So without having a grounded understanding of the tools youre using, take a more simplistic approach to songwriting as you learn your tools more. I made my first album 17 years ago and I learn something more everyday that I did not know. It aint easy sometimes.

EDIT: Mr durden, I shoulda said, you shouldnt rely SOLEY on compressors to make your low end fatter. Sorry, ill look over after typing next time.

If you want a more full kick, try taking 3 of the same kicks and layer them together with EQing on all of them to cut down on some of the Hz. If you're using ableton, start using the spectrum tool on your channels to give you a visual idea on where your Hz levels are. If you don't know how you should go about doing that you should look up some tutorials on EQ and compression based on the specific genre you are trying to produce.

Remember, louder isn't always better when it comes to your samples, lowering the sample volume and then mastering them correctly will ultimately bring those volume levels up that shouldn't be over bearing.

Hope that helps.

After seeing this I reread all your statements and I don't think I'm in disagreement with anything said here so far outside of the one comment about not knowing how to play guitar. And that's only because everyone I knew starting out was a band geek growing up. We all played for plenty of shitty punk and metal bands. But in the end you might still be right though.

Re: Help me make music: Part 3

If you want a beefy kick throw away all your samples and synthesize it from scratch.

tips?

I know how to adjust the ADSR to get a kick, but it's always at a very low volume.

You can make some thick kicks in massive.
