| Where to begin?
For XMas, I got this little music program for my computer. It's not even as avanced as Music Generator2 for PS2. But despite that, I've made what I think are decent tracks. But there's so many things this program doesn't do, I've given up on it. Now I want something real. Not just a toy like this eJay program. So what should I get? What's the best of the best? What shoould I avoid? Lemme know how it's really done and where to begin

my advice is go buy Reason and learn that. then, in a couple of years, ask that question again.

yeah, reason is a great starting point to learning the basics of signal routing, subractive synthesis, sampling etc.. rebirth is a good starting point as well if you don't have the $200+ to fork over for reason. calkwalk's new project5 is looking like a good well rounded software package right out of the box. on the cheaper side (meaning less expensive not necessarily less quality) of the sequencing world (ones with VST anyway) there are: fa-soft's N-track studio FruityLoops Magix music studio muzys synapse orion on the most costly side there is: steinberg Cubase SX steinberg Nuendo emagic Logic (discontinued for windows; RIP) cakewalk Sonar 2 you should do some reading and find a sequencer/production environment that suits you/has features that you would need/use. read about lots of stuff, get free VST instruments/effects etc.. here: www.kvr-vst.com | |

The best advice I can offer to you is this: If you're looking for mature, intelligent and informed discussion on the principles and techniques of music production (including spinning) go here: www.futureproducers.com No genre wars. No girlfriend swapping. No ravers who start fights and live at home with their parents. Just good advice from pros who know what's up. Newbies are welcome and encouraged to contribute and learn. It's all about the love of sound. And the best part is that it's not just electronic music producers. People from all styles of music and all walks of life are on there, so the potential for learning is almost limitless. Use this board for goofing off at work. Use that one to learn yourself something. Just my 0.02. BTW Merritt is an assbag. Stay away from him at all costs. ![]() M |

haha miles! i wasn't trying to be an assbag. i guess it came out that way. in essence- what i was saying is start small and learn... it's gonna take a while to get your bearings. look at everything as a learning process. that's also why my advice is get the Reason (and other Propellerheads stuff) cause it's a GREAT learning tool and once you see your limitations- you'll teach yourself how to overcome those. that's where the 'come back to us in a year' thing came from.
