It's basically a joystick for MIDI software. It looks very similar to keyboard. You can assign different commands to different keys so you don't have to use your mouse as much.

Cool stuff.

There are lots of different MIDI controllers. Some have knobs and whatnot which you can program to knobs and whatnot on your software. Others are just keyboards, like any synth's keyboard, but with one of these you can control softsynths like you would a hardware synth. And then some have both.

A midi controller is an input device used for controlling other pieces of midi hardware or midi-enabled software.

Most controllers are keyboards, but there are lots of other types of controllers out there...breath controllers, etc

Check out this company--> http://www.infusionsystems.com/index.shtml

They make a controller called the I-CubeX. It's a modular midi controller system that has a bunch of different sensors for controlling midi equipment with everything from temperature, humidity, ultrasound, magnetics, etc.. some crazy shit
