not to be an ass...

"i'm sorry, no one can ever replace cliff burton though..."

i think the sad part of that statement is the fact ANYONE could've replaced cliff - mostly because metallica's production on the first 4 albums was so guitar/drum-heavy they pushed the bass into the background that you can't even hear it except for small parts in some songs..aside from "anethesia" and "for whom the bell tolls" and some riffs on master of puppets he's lost in the mix - which is just shameful, straight shameful. i even read an interview with james back in '92 right after the black album came out talking about how they actually learned to mix in the bass guitar once bob rock showed them how...guess that flemming russamen cat didn't!

don't get me wrong, i was a huge metallica fan up 'til the black album...

garage days revisted e.p. (1987) truly is still the shit, and quintessential metallica to me!

It used to really get to me how ppl say "I USED to be a fan until ____ album came out.

I started listening to Metallica during the Reload dayz....granted, not their heaviest stuff. But I have realized that people do grow and mature and their (bands) sound will probably follow suite.

I fucking love all things Metallica. They put on a most excellent show and I just love them to pieces. Of course I prefer the older stuff now...but man, the newER stuff is killer too! I'm not the hugest St. Anger fan.....but, I can appreciate the fact they were expanding their creative horizons.

Metallica, I THINK, demands respect as they are one of the very few bands that have been around 20+ years and are still rockin' it hard! Still packing venues. Selling millions. They're doing something right. And while the thought of them without Cliff OR Jason is kinda......odd, they still have my vote as one of my top 3 (if not tied for first with TOOL) fav. bands.

m/f werd....i put together a metallica compilation for a coworker the other day, and i found a bunch of mp3s of cliff's live solos....i'd swear he was playing lead guitar if i didn't know better....unbelievable....and yes, you can barely hear the bass guitar most of the time on lots of old metal, unless you have some serious subs.

DJ Titan is still bootleg
i still love my old metallica, and kinda like all the stuff after the black album, the thing that changed them? -- Bob Rock, their producer....james hetfield was never really a singer, but more of a vocalist for a metal band that knew how to shred...but, after watching the making of the black album, u can see bob rock coaching james on carrying out his vocals, and turning him into a singer, and then the new metallicawas born....not really bad, but i hate not seeing another 'and justice for all' type ofalbum...the new stuff is cool, but is aimed towards the pop crowd who digs korn and limp bizkit. but respect to metallica for paving the way for metal. for a minute, pantera was THE metal band imo, but what the fuck happened to them?
