FAQ: How do I track (split) my demo CD?

Welcome to the first installment of frequently asked questions of the Music/DJ/Producer forum. I'm trying to cut down on the number of repeat threads for the exact same question.

One which I notice a TON of is people asking how to track their demo out. There's actually quite a few ways to do this, however the easiest seems to be with Soundforge or Cool Edit Pro (now known as Adobe Audition). Below I have included quotes and links to previous threads outlining the process for each program. Good Luck!

When you've got your file:
-Special menu / Regions list / clear
-Place markings at the track breaks by positioning the cursor at the appropriate place and pressing M [remember to Mark the beginning and end of the CD too! Important!]
-Special menu / Regions list / Markers to regions
-Tools / extract regions

This will save all the regions to separate files, and it only takes about 2 minutes to save...

i would suggest just using cool edit pro 2.0. you will be able to record, set track marks, delete any dead space, and burn it with the same program. this process only takes about an hour and a half to do. i am including the time to mix the set, track it, and burn it. if you need any other info about this leave a message on here. i am sure i will get back with you. o yea one more thing, cool edit pro 2.0 will give you the option to save the files in alot of different formats...
Also in that second thread, there's a small tip on using WaveLab. I have no experience with this program, but the instructions seem simple enough so I thought I'd include it.

Just record, drop track markers, burn.
Please feel free to add your own 2 cents on proper tracking techniques ONLY. Anything non-constructive or not pertaining to the topic at hand will be deleted. I'll start other threads as time goes on for EQing, mixing, phrasing, hooking up your equipment, etc.

i find it quite easy to use CDRWIN. its very small program an implements burning cue files. so all you have to do is record your demo. save it as a WAV file. then create a new text file and create a cue sheet for where you want your tracks split. import it to CDRWIN with your wav file and burn. That way you dont have to split your file into separate tracks and you dont have to worry about that 2-second gap because there wont be one.

I'll step in......

Load the .wav file or mp3 file....

right click the file, in the first Track Properties tab set the pause to 0 seconds.

Then click on the Index, Limits, and Splits tab....

In the wav editor hit the Split button where you want the new tracks to begin.

When its all done click OK.

Easy stuff.

WaveLab 3.0 or higher

Open .wav or .mp3 file.

Find exact point you want track #2 to begin & drop a "track boundary" marker. Repeat.

Save All.

File, New, CD Program. Right click on the drop down menu. Select "add tracks" then click on the file you just dropped the markers on. Your tracks should now appear in the CD Program.

Right click on the drop down menu again. Go to advanced settings. Set time between tracks to 0.00.

Play the CD Program to see if its to your liking. If it is....burn away.

peace, Will

Dont jump on me for this but,
I record on SoundForge,
then save the tracks I want as wav's, and
finally I use RecordNow which doesnt have gaps in it.
So my final CD is indexed and has no gaps.
If this helped good, if it didnt sorry.

just about every burning program you can find can burn a mix without "gaps".
the feature to look for is usually called "disc at once"

I've known several people to have trouble with Roxio leaving gaps even when set to DAO. Nero seems to be the best.

I use Audio Surgeon, it is very useful and easy to use. All you have to do is record the mix, and open the file. The program allows you to just drop track markers wherever you want them. You can pull up the music visually and magnify it (ALOT) for more exact track timing. The program also comes with tools to clean up pops, improve sound quality, and also has a normalize tool. Amongst alot of other nice features. Overall, great program, and it only cost me $30.

Right on...sounds like SoundForge except $370 cheaper.
