| PC Geeks??? moshen?
the other thread is going elsewhere.... my pc is getting really old and slow as fuck. i kinda want to do what stan did... i need to go cheap (because aparently i'm going to fall hard soon) the use for the computer is to hook onto the internet- some games (nothing too intensive). run some software synths. just one at a time- not not too intensive there either. the amd's have been getting great reviews. should I go with that? I haven't researched pc's lately. this question is for anybody. dual? single? somewhat pimp video card. I have a Delta 4 or whatever that is... also a Core 2 i could drop in it.

Hey merritt, I recently did the whole new comp thing for about 900 minus monitor and keyboard and mouse and such. I think pentium's are worth the extra cash but thats just my IMO. I went from a pent3 700 to a pent 4 1.6 gig and let me tell you its been the best experience ever. Finally im getting to finish up tracks that had me against the wall as far as cpu usage was concerned. Here is my new setup: Soyo Dragon (I actually dont recommend these, They work great but it took me 2 days 24 hours a day to get it all setup ie. Fualty bios problems etc etc) Seagate Barracuda (Looking at the specs its hard to tell the diffrence between this model and the current western digitals but the important part is you want prolly 7200 rpms and 8meg cache speed) Since the Western digitals and Seagate are about 10 dollars apart in price in comprable models then the Seagate tends to be more stable IMO. Pentium 4 (Drool, need I say more) Only problem you might have with this is that pentium 4's can spike which translates to jumps in your cpu usage in intervals kinda like every second or soo. Nothing major and with most audio setups you never even experience any peril but they have a new plugin called blockfish that stabilizes the signal by sending dead air through the Bus channels and seems to fix the problem. Hope this helps merrit,

Is eBay an option? If so check "Home > All Categories > Computers > Desktop PCs" for several options in the 2ghz range. They have several name brand new machines in the $500 range, and clones as low as $250~$300....which would be good for you since you'll be unemployed soon. Personally, as cliche as it may be, I'd get a Dell. The advantage in that is that you know it will work because all the hardware was designed/chosen for that machine, and they have good support.

if you don't want to mess with actually putting this stuff together (sticking a cpu on a motherboard, etc), check out www.myoptimal.com they're located right off Spring Valley and 75 and they have fantastic deals. Check out their custom built systems: http://www.myoptimal.com/desktops.htm They also sell barebones systems for dirt cheap.... |
