What sequencer?

Ok I have reason 2.5. Yea I know it has a sequencer, but I have read a few things about rewiring Reason to another program with a better sequencer or just rewiring to a sequencer. My question is if you are using reason do you just use the sequencer in it, or rewire it to something else. If you do the latter which sequencer do you use/recommend?

I think this makes since. If it doesnt then I will kill myself.

i just run the sounds thru Digital Performer (rewire)

i rarely use reason... but it's there if i need it.

you can use shitloads of plugins when you rewire it thru something else.

What Merritt said. Find whatever sequencer you like and go with that. I don't even like how rewire works, so I dump everything from Reason to audio and then into my sequencer. It's a backwards way of doing it, but it's what I'm comfortable with for now.

I use Cubase btw.

Ok thanks for the input guys. What are some good sequencers that you would recommend?

To Stanfield:
Is cubase a sequencer only or does it have other stuff like reason? A stand alone sequencer would be the ideal thing I am looking for.

Depends on what you mean by "other stuff." It's got TONS of features and is very versatile, but it's just a sequencer.

If you are talking about drum machines/synths and that sort of thing, no it doesn't come with them, but it will support any of the plug in's like that that you want to use.

Edit: Sequencers: Cubase, Logic, Digital Performer, Pro Tools, Nuendo, etc.....

they are all very good... & all IMO much better than the one in reason.

gonna work on a "networked" Nuendo set up next week. he can call up another studio over the net. should be interesting!

if you're gonna use Cubase, ultimately SX 2.0 is the
way to go. But getting SL 2.0 is cheaper and has
most of the shit you need now, anyway... then you
can upgrade later when you have more money.

Sonar 3.0 is funkaaay, too

Logic is good if you have MAC, but there's a HUGE
learning curve and very little in the way of tutorials
to help you from scratch.

They all are good, tho.

its a matter of which interface works well with how
you create music.

So is Sonar 3.0 basically the same thing as Cakewalk? Or am I totally off here?

i dont see why you would. if anything, you can get some very nice sounds out of the synths.

i hear all this talk about how the sequencer in reason sucks. what do people not like about it? i really dont see it being all that bad at all, besides the fact you cant really edit audio........yet anyway.

Personally, I'm just not the biggest fan of how Reason works as a whole. I absolutely hate the samplers. I hate the fact that to bring in audio you have to use recycle to splice it up first. I think the sequencer works more like a toy than a sequencer. I don't feel that you can get the audio 100% where you want it to fall in their sequencer. Also like you said, you can't really edit it at all. When I worked a lot in Reason, I found myself having to work around the software a lot instead of it being able to do what I needed it to. Kinda like trying to get a square through a round hole sometimes.

Having said that, there are also things that I love. I think both the Dr. Rex as well as the drum machine kick anus. You get a lot of good sounds and you can get refills all over the place. I'm still learning to get synths to do what I want them to do in general, so I also won't hate there.

I learned a lot and would recommend it to someone new to production any day. I've still got SO far to go, but I was ready for a better sequencer pretty quick.

yea- don't get me wrong either...

reason is not a bad program at all. in fact it's really nice.

the sequencer isn't all bad either, but I'm with Stan. it's just not the right thing for me.

this is exactly how i felt about it.

no sonar 3 is not the same as cakewalk. it is made by cakewalk but is the flagship product in thier lineup.
