Psychedelic Breaks/New School Breaks

Dallas grew up on House and funky breaks, this we know. I'm wondering why with that said that we don't see a whole lot more exposure and promotion in Dallas for New School Breaks and Psy Breaks.

I see there being a *lot* of cross over in the PsyTrance/Psy Breaks world and new school breaks. A lot of the NSB being put out these days is damn near Psy Trance. Nice rolling hard driving stuff that is quite psychedelic. I personally would love to go to more events and hear this style and I would also like to hear from DJ's that may spin this stuff around here. From what I have found there are *very* few that spin it here. Is it because of the stigma of funky breaks? This shit is blowing up on the West Coast, so I guess it is just a matter of time, but damn, sometimes I wish Dallas was a bit more progressive in thought and sounds.

If you mix this stuff, please get in touch with me, I would like a demo. Yuo can definately expect to hear this sound on the main stage at our future events at some point in the night as we build it up and tear it down. !

Here are some specific labels/producers and DJ's that focus on the sound I'm referrign to:

labels: 10 Kilo, Acetate, Beatnix Labs, BrandNuBass.com, Botchit & Scarper, Chew The Fat, Electric Kingdom, Freakaboom, Fuel
Kingsize, Mechanoise, Nu Breaks, Outcaste, Skint, TCR, Wall Of Sound, Whole 9 Yards

Artists: Digitalis, Meat Katie, Tipper, B.L.I.M, Freq Nasty
DJ's: Adam O'hana(SF), Anon(SF), Loren(SF), Felix The Dog(SF), Icon(NY)

You don't hear about it in Dallas because most people who do play NSB, myself included, mix it with 2step to retain a warm and human sound. If you want a demo from me of dark deep NSB I'll be happy to provide it. Also check out both of Midway's mixes on www.tuffbreaks.com as they incorporate plenty of NSB. If you would like to book myself or Midway for a NSB set or to request a demo please contact me at bookings@tuffbreaks.com

I've also heard Jobe play a decent amount of NSB, and I -think- Carl Cue could pull a few sets of it out as well.

It's not that Dallas isn't progressive David, it's just that you're not listening in the right places.

Right, but what I mean is that it is a *very* short list of people that you provided and that I know about. I think others that could pull it off, if they built up their collections with more records of that style would be James Meadows and Dj Uhm and Kevin(not sure on last name, hangs with Mark Foster.

Hearing it at events would also be quite tough, with maybe a little drip here and there...nothing really substantial to talk about though. Come on Covert Ops, I would think this would be up your alley. ;-)

Interesting that you add in the 2 step...I will take a listen Phil, thanks!

Trancey Breaks producer in the house...

Project T.E.K.

That's my production moniker for the style of breaks that could be considered NSB, but I like to call it breaks trance. Fuk, it might be psy, and a little electro as well, but it's breaks none the less.

I dropped DJ Jobe a demo last night and he said he was interested in helping me get signed to a local breaks record label for production purposes.

If all goes well, vinyl might be out pretty soon.

Hell, I'll probably dub a couple of Hard press 12"s to hand around and see what kind of response the trax get at parties and local clubs...

If you'd like a demo... email me at crazed777@aol.com

Please, only serious inquiries though. I'm looking for a record label that will enable me to release nationally syndicated vinyl and maybe even and album in the future... and the ultimate goal is the Live p.a.

But I needs some cash for all that hardware.

And next weekend I'm bringing in a good friend of mine who is a phenomonal female vocalist to lay down some lyrical samples and co-produce some trax.... ever heard Funny Break by orbital?

I love those smooth trancey female vocals over a thumpin' break beat.... synths goin' off...

I can't wait to finish that track...

OK, I ramble... anyhoo... anyone interested in a demo? It's a 6 track work that is fully mastered...

David, I think Dallas will get there...

We just have to get past the hype first (which already appears to be wearing off)

btw: I think I caught a glimpse of you at the Plano Municipal Court a few weeks ago, but you walked out the door before I could say hi. Tickets are a bitch, huh?

breaks..

I'm into into UK breaks (nu skool mainly.. a little progressive-style stuff as well).

Dallas is seriously lacking when it comes to breaks exposure. Any breaks that I've heard have usually lended themselves towards the funky arena, and some 2step stuff. As far as actual nu skool, I've heard little.

I've been spinning and producing nu skool breaks for a while (I'm an east-coast transplant-- it's a little more popular there).

I think you'll start to see more breaks in Dallas (and the rest of the US) soon.. It's starting to pick up some steam. Labels like Perfecto and Bedrock have been supporting uk breaks veterans like Hyper.. support across the board for producers like PMT. I think it's going to be an interesting year.

Good labels to watch out for: Forged (tons of good Koma&Bones releases), Functional Breaks, Botchit Breaks, Sound of Habib (Good new label), Marine Parade(Adam Freeland's label), Thursday Club, Distinctive(Y3k, Y4k, etc), Kilowatt(Hyper's new label), etc.

My all-time favorite producers are Koma & Bones (these guys are incredible) and B.L.I.M. Most of the music that I spin/produce follows in these guy's footsteps--They're true innovators.

For Dallas nu skool and progressive breaks keep an eye out for BURUFUNK(Curtis Fallis). His current release on the Florida based label Insominiac is tearing up in the UK even being a US import. He is about to be the 1st domestic producer on Freakaboom with the first release on a compilation series of 12 inch's.

Anyways ... gotta give mad props to Curtis who just happens to be engaged to my best friend Leaha. Congrads yall.

He's the SHITTY MC SHIT-SHIT!

I LOVE his style of Breaks production and track arrangement...

and his Live P.A.: INCREDIBLE!

he's my local Breaks idol. Glad to see some mor BuruFunk supporters out there.

Who could of thought Springtown could give us a musicain such as BuruFunk?

Not me.... I used to play that High School in Football back in the day... just a bunch of corn-fed hardcore Texans...

BuruFunk is the shinning light in that town for sure.

By the By: When and were is his next gig?

OH YA!

Yes, BURUFUNK Is the bomb...(and my fiance'). Yah, we live out in the sticks...Merritt was just playing some of hiw new stuff that is going to be released on Freekaboom and Insomniac saturday night...and just happened to make a smart-ass comment bout us living out where the roosters wake you up! HA...its true true tho!

http://www.mp3.com/burufunk
http://www.insomniacrecords.com

Check out some of his old stuff and be looking for his record releases. The sight should tell you what is out. I think he is currently working on releasing his first cd albumn release in the near future. So, that will ROCK.

Not to brag...but even if I weren't engaged to this man...he's one of the top producers in the US today. His heart and passion for music is beyond my comprehension. Hard work and dedication to the sound he's found....its bliss..pure bliss. As for live shows...we are waiting on someone to pop up and ask us...and maybe with his UK release...we will get a gig over there. Im doing vocals live and studio for him. Just keep your eyes and ears open and if anything comes up...i'll post it to the dallasraves.org site of course

Much love to the new breaks community!
