Last Thursday at the SoHo House, Sasha and John Digweed screened Delta Heavy, a DVD documenting their latest American tour. It's not that it's BAD or boring, per se, it just isn't what one would expect of a DVD released by two of the world's top DJs. It's more of a video yearbook for the people involved with the tour than a concert DVD, or even a documentary exposing any kind of story or information. As a Sasha and Digweed fan, I would have liked to see and hear more music and more coverage of their actual shows. There's obviously a great soundtrack running as transitional and background music, but the music was by no means Delta Heavy's focus. The film consists of a lot of short interviews with the road crew, stage managers, and John and Sasha themselves, but it's mostly short quips, inside jokes, and recounting funny road stories. They all seemed to have had a genuinely good time and be genuinely nice, fun-loving, bumbling Brits, but that's mostly all I took from the screening. I mean, Sasha and his crew seem like a lot of fun to hang out with! On the other hand, this is a DVD for true fans, that is, people who genuinely want to know John and Sasha and their crew as people, not just for kids looking to trip out on their couch in a concert DVD experience. One thing Delta Heavy definitely accomplishes: it highlights the growth of the electronic dance music culture in America. Digweed talks a lot about how the energy here now is like it was in England years ago, so there is something to be said not for exactly what this DVD is, but what its release and production here in the U.S. represents. All in all, Sasha and Digweed are unquestionably great DJs who put on a great show and are beloved by their friends and fans. Delta Heavy simply lets us get to know them a little better. Hopefully the next one will let us get to know their music a little better, too. (Tomorrow, check out what CP critic Mike Gehrig has to say about Delta Heavy). Delta Heavy hits stores on Tuesday, February 9. Link To Original Article |
