In person, the Grammys feel more like a drawn out talent show. Don’t take this the wrong way -- the performances are amazing. Never under any other circumstances would you see Madonna perform with the Gorrillaz, Paul McCartney join Jay-Z and Linkin Park, or a guest appearance, albeit brief, by Sly Stone. And then there's U2 with Mary J. Blige, John Legend’s “Ordinary People” and Keith Urban with Faith Hill. The Sly and the Family Stone Tribute performance was strange due to Sly’s odd couple of minutes on stage, but contained a great mix of performers and genres, from Ciara and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine to Steven Tyler, Joss Stone and others. While Kanye West and Jaime Foxx ratcheted up the energy in the Staples Center with a performance of “Gold Digger,” it would have been nice if they mixed it up a little, something besides the radio version and college marching band theme. Paul McCartney was lacking in his performance, and Mariah didn’t exactly wow the crowd with her vocal talents. However, all in all, even with some lackluster performances, this years Grammy’s was not to be missed.
That being said, the vibe in the house could have used a little work. As we sat all dressed up in our hippest attempts at “Grammy-insider” attire, we mused that maybe alcohol should be served. Something to keep the people in the stands excited for the awards and get them dancing in their seats. With the great line-up of performances, why not? But then again, the Grammy’s is not a concert, but a celebration of the year’s best musical achievements, so maybe a little discretion should be preserved, but still the energy level could be improved upon. The top awards went to Green Day for Record of the Year, U2 cleaned up with five Grammy’s, and Kelly Clarkson, the original American Idol winner, was flabbergasted after receiving two awards. One noticeable omission from the award recipients was Kanye West, who for the second year in a row didn’t receive any of the top awards outside of his genre. Unlike many other award shows, The Grammy Awards does stay true to their purpose – celebrating music with music, and that they do a good job of. Link To Original Article |
