When the beloved Meatpacking haven Pink Elephant shut its doors last year, you could hear the wails of many a model, VIP and brown-noser across the Gotham jungle. Well, re-apply your mascara, because we’ve found the prized pachyderm nestled within the west Chelsea clubland, grazing along with kinsfolk like Bungalow 8, Marquee, Home, Guest House, and BED.
Relocated in its new West 27th home, PE no. 2 has über-vamped up crobar’s former VIP Propeller Lounge with bejeweled pearl chandeliers, buttery leather banquettes and tables, ornate wrought-iron garnitures, and well, a whole lot of wood. From the jutting wall panels, to the chocolaty hardwood floors, to the gleaming wood ceiling, this opulent elephant must have cleared out an entire forest.
Once past the strict door sentry, expect to meet a long, smooth hardwood hallway and a biting urge to take off your shoes. Once through, it’s like a suave kabillionaire’s living room, complete with flirty eye candy, dim lighting and plenty of seating. The best feature is found when you tilt your chin up: large exposed wood beams plunge down like the hull of a ship against a glossy red backdrop, structured not unlike the ribcage of a large land mammal.
And although the place reeked of shellac during last Thursday’s preview night, one could still detect a hint of sweetness in the air. No, not alcohol. It’s the new scent machine that discreetly exhales aromatherapy- and pheromone-laden whiffs onto the crowd—a plus for a future late nights full of rancid spilled drinks and desperate vultures looking for an upper hand.
Some things haven’t changed in Pink Elephant’s second incarnation. Like the pricy drinks, the deep soulful music, and the unmistakable following of NYC’s most illustrious and beautiful. We’ll see how things will fare with competition/complements just steps away. Yet, with so much attention paid to décor and ambience, it’s evident that after a winter of hibernation, this blue-blooded beast has definitely beefed up.
