That's what the folks at aptly-named Spira Inc. are doing and it has created quite a stir. The idea is really quite simple: instead of air bubbles and foam, they put springs in the soles of their shoes to make walking and running easier on your feet. But the springs that Spira developed were almost too good. Their WaveSpring technology returns 87 to a whooping 96 percent of the energy you put in your step, and that was a little too much for USA Track and Field who banned the shoes from competition.

But assuming you don't want to win the New York Marathon in these babies, they are worth a look. The shoes come in a number of colors and styles and range in price from $90 to $120. The springs are so durable that they will stay in shape even longer than the shoe they're encased in – and probably longer than you, the runner. And even if you're just bouncing in them on Friday nights, you shouldn't have any trouble with the doorman at the club—they come in black leather, too.
