Despite the number of female DJs in the country, men still seem to rule the nightlife vinyl. But the tables are turning (get it—turn tables, DJs) and the ladies are bringing a new touch of funk and style to the DJ trademark. Meet some of New York’s hottest spinners.
Becka
Hometown: Philadelphia, PA
You might have seen her on Dance Party USA, where she appeared regularly. When the rave scene took off in her hometown Philly, she sought a career as a DJ, drawing on inspiration from the likes of Little Louis and Inner City. Becka has played in Fuse in Brussels, Metropolis in Paris and Limelight in New York City. She has recently been in the studio co-producing tracks and working on solo projects. She is set to begin a tour in Europe this summer as a result of a growing demand for her original style and phenomenal talent.
Where you can catch her sets: NYC and her mini tour in Europe includes dates in Switzerland and Spain.
DJ Cat
Hometown: Houston, Texas
Growing up with a father that spun for hippies and rock kids, naturally DJ Cat was drawn to the loud noise of the nightlife scene. While other kids were at home watching cartoons she was watching bands perform from the comfort of her stroller. Instead of being bothered by the noise she was inspired. You can catch her spinning a mix of electro house and rock at various fashion shows and events. If you’re in LA any time soon you might also run into her shooting her first music video for “Kiss,” which she produced, wrote and, performed on.
Where you can catch her sets: ROK Bar in South Beach and Beauty Bar in NY every first Saturday of the month.
Jen Mas
Hometown: Bronx, New York
Founder of Vitus Productions, Jen Mas has been organizing electronic music events in the NYC area since 1997. Shortly after becoming a promoter, she became drawn to the idea of moving a crowd with sound and was instantly fascinated by the use of turntables. Jen studied piano as a child and set out to learn every aspect of being a great DJ. Her sets include various genres of music as she can move different types of crowds every time she gets on the tables.
Where you can catch her sets: United States and Canada; worldwide coming soon.
DJ Jolene
Hometown: Bay Area, CA native (now Brooklyn dweller)
You would wouldn’t guess it, but DJ Jolene attended a religious high school that didn’t even play music at her prom. Although she was taught that dancing was a sin, she still loves to shake her booty. It makes sense that she loves to spin the kind of tunes that make other people want to shake theirs too. DJ Jolene has been spinning vinyl for ten years and even has the largest house music station on the internet (which she started). You’re most likely to find her spinning heavy bass line grooves and vintage jams. Who knows, one day she may be spinning them in the middle of a farm in Iowa. But for now…
