Post CP NEWS: From Russia with Booze

Forget your notions of babushkas and balalaikas; the theme in Russia today is "Go bold or go home." Nightlife in Saint Petersburg is varied. And it reflects the attitude of Russians in general. From their sometimes wacky style of dress to the way they carry it, Russians really know how to work it even when you’re sure it’s not working. So when traveling to Russia, here’s what to expect from the nightlife so you can make the most of the white nights.

Music

Come on, who doesn’t love a little 80’s Euro pop every now and then? In a disco-ish dance club called Triumph the music was a little bit of everything, from techno to hip-hop to euro pop. You may recognize a song or two by Madonna and Shakira, or maybe you’re even familiar with the likes of Modern Talking, just don’t expect to hear any mash-ups from DJ AM.

Drinks

Okay, now for the drinks. Dare I even say the “V” word? When in Russia, do as the Russians do and order a bottle of vodka…and finish it. If there’s one thing you can do to get yourself permanently ejected from a Russian nightclub, it’s leaving a bottle while it’s still in use. Well, okay, not really. But typically Russians will get a table for themselves and their posse and order a bottle of either the hard stuff, wine, or champagne. You can get beer or cocktails for around 150 Rubles (about $6), but most go for the bottle bargain.

Cover

The cover charge for nightclubs can be anywhere from zero to about 300 rubles ($12.50). Triumph charges nothing for women and about $10 for men to enter.

Nudity

At or around midnight, it’s common for topless dancers to appear, not just in strip-specific or erotic clubs, but many of the dance clubs and discos in Saint Petersburg.

Attitude

Generally Russians are a lot more laid back than Americans and they’re not afraid to look like they’re trying. Interestingly enough, Russian men don’t seem to blatantly hit on women despite the plethora of beautiful ones.

So if you go, don your best duds, let loose and definitely don’t pass up the chance to party in Piter.
