![]() | Just in time for stocking stuffers, a quick shot of Clubplanet CD reviews. Because nothing says Happy Holidays like 180 minutes of EDM.
An offshoot of the immensely successful Balance mix series (see below), EQ’s inaugural Electric album was a surprising success, and with success comes expectations. To follow up the genre-defying first installment, Electric_02 brought together six artists, including the Nubreed threesome, the DJ duo King Unique and Neil Swaab, famed illustrator and cartoonist. The album showcases the best in cutting edge, underground electronic dance music, but as often happens in artist pairings, Nubreed’s techy, dirty electro effort outshines King Unique’s more minimal disc. From the very beginning, when Nubreed’s second disc opens with Headland’s “Nitefall,” to the very end, the album continuously delivers big room sounds that any dance music lover will enjoy. Grade: B
Captivating a listener from beginning to end is never easy, particularly in today’s day and age of immediate gratification. Yet Undulation 2 is an album which takes listeners on a journey through every track and style of music, and like a good book which can’t be complete if you don’t read a chapter, you’ll find that you are cheating yourself if you skip a track on this album. Featuring track’s such as the duo’s own “Get Lost” and Layo and Bushwacka’s “Less is More,” the album steadily builds to a crescendo with tracks like the beautiful “Freefall” by Sleeper Thief. Grade: B+
Jimmy Van M – Balance 010 (Stomp) Tackling a milestone album is never easy, but Jimmy Van M handles it with aplomb on Balance 010, the tenth album in the highly successful Balance mix series. The type of album DJs dream about making, Balance 010 allowed Van M to showcase not just his DJing skills, but also his diverse record collection as the album spans across three discs and every genre of electronic music. Disc one (Downtempo) features an ambient mix of tracks from the likes of Future Sound of London, Coldcut and Boards of Canada, while disc two (Midtempo) combines together more vocal laden tracks with trip hop. On disc three (Uptempo), Van M delves into more minimal and acidy tracks. Throughout the entire effort Van M maintains his flawless, signature mixing style and computer like programming ability, which combine to make this album a real treat today and in the future. Grade: A- ______________________________________________
