We hate to admit it, but we still get off on spotting a celebrity or two – especially when they’re drunk, dancing, or generally making damn fools of themselves. Sure, VIP-friendly nightclubs require plunking down $300 for Grey Goose, but can you really put a price tag on seeing Tara Reid turned away by the doorman? In Part 1 of Clubplanet's Star Bars, we examine some of the Page Six-worthy hotspots in New York and LA.
NEW YORK
Where: Rose at Gramercy Park Hotel
2 Lexington Ave. | 212.920.3300
Who: Mischa Barton, Victoria Beckham, Orlando Bloom, Winona Ryder, Kate Bosworth, Lil’ Kim, Josh Lucas, Jared Leto.
Why: The celebrity guestlist may be impressive, but what really makes Gramercy famous is who can’t attend. Paris Hilton and her clan are famously banned from the door, which caused a mini sensation in the celebrity gossip world. Up your cool factor with your friends by claiming you’re more hip than Ms. Hilton. Probably a better actor, too.

Where: Marquee
289 10th Ave. | 646.473.0202
Who: A-list all over. Eva Longoria, Christina Aguilera, Paris Hilton, Brandon Davis, P. Diddy, Linsday Lohan, Mary-Kate Olsen, and a celebrity cast of thousands. Not quite as exclusive or high wattage as it was just nine months ago, but still a force.
Why: The celebs do the VIP thing, while the rest of us regular Joes have to wrestle with the notoriously stingy velvet rope. If you get in, the drink menu caters to the fun-loving California crowd, serving up warm-weather specialty drinks like margaritas and mojitos.
Where: Stereo
512 W 29th St. | 212.244.1965
Who: Wilmer Valderrama, Lindsay Lohan, Missy Elliot, Jay-Z, Avril Lavinge, and Alyssa Milano.
Why: Stereo’s Hamptons spin-off Stereo House seems to be getting all the press and big names these days (including Scarlett Johannson and Chloe Sevingny), but DJ AM still regularly spins at the Manhattan original. Kick back and enjoy the juxtaposition of graffiti-laced walls with Dom Perignon, and table service on the main floor adds to the laid-back atmosphere.
Where: MisShapes at Don Hill’s
511 Greenwich St. | 212.219.2850
Who: Jessica and Ashlee Simpson, Madonna, Sienna Miller, Hilary Duff, and Kelis mingle with indie cut-ups like The Killers, Bloc Party, Annie, Art Brut, The Sounds, and Ladytron.
Why: Hollywood’s A-listers have recently begun infiltrating MisShapes, Don Hill’s weekly hipster dance party, much to the chagrin of the regular clientele. But can you can’t blame celebs for wanting an “in” on a party where music comes first – guest DJs (usually musicians or rock journalists in the know) spin an eclectic mix of music, and up-and-coming bands often perform live in the early evenings.

Where: Butter
415 Lafayette St. | 212.253.2828
Who: Jessica Simpson, La Lohan, Naomi Campbell, Paris Hilton, P. Diddy, Nick Lachey, Vanessa Minillo, Kanye West, and Russell Simmons.
Why: Half nightclub, half restaurant, Butter’s dining menu – which includes out-there options like ostrich – has been receiving favorable reviews. But the bulk of Butter’s recent press has chronicled the scandalous couplings that occur inside, including Travis Barker’s recent rebound with Paris Hilton.
Where: Bungalow 8
515 W. 27th St. | 212.629.3333
Who: Everyone and anyone you could probably imagine. Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Tara Reid, Justin Timberlake, Jessica Simpson, Jeremy Piven, Luke Wilson, Mary-Kate Olsen, Stavros Niarchos… the list goes on.
Why: Still the king. The most exclusive of NYC nightspots is featured in a celebrity rag/blog once every five seconds – a new celebrity couple getting frisky here, a Hollywood starlet creating new drug rumors there. It may be easy to quietly stalk your favorite star, but be prepared to pay for the eye candy: champagne cocktails run $30 for two, or a cool grand for an entire bottle or bubbly.
LOS ANGELES
(Originally posted here, but reprinted below to save you the extraordinary hassle of clicking a link.)

Where: LAX
1714 Las Palmas Ave. | 323-464-0171
Who: Wilmer Valderrama, Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag of MTV’s The Hills, Shawn Wayans, DJ AM of course, Nicole Richie and various soap stars.
Why: This jet-set style club has celeb DJ DJ AM to thank for a good portion of its celeb draw. That and Bolthouse is still pulling a great crowd for his Wednesday night events.
Where: Social Hollywood
6525 Sunset Blvd | 323-462-5222
Who: The most recent night I was there Lindsay Lohan was in attendance, Tommy Lee, Lance Bass and his beau Richen, Hiedi from The Hills playing her role as “under-ager out on the town”, Terah Gisolo (Quincinera) and Lady Victoria Hervey.
Why: Uber-Chic and beautiful spot, Wednesday’s tough velvet rope and small capacity ensure partying in relative peace, but every night of the week is good here. You can’t beat all the rooms either, Celebs who need to get a moments privacy for... er, whatever, can always find one of the rooms semi-vacant or a hallway corner as the party circulates from room to room.
Where: Privilege
8117 Sunset Blvd | 323-654-0030
Who: Paris, Nicky and beau Kevin Connolly, LA Laker alum Rick Fox, Shanna Moakler – now ex-wife to Travis Barker, Travis Barker himself, Fat Joe and posse, The Game, Brandon Davis, Kim Kardashian, Tara Reid, Jessica Simpson and many more…
Why: The newly re-modeled venue has upped its hotness factor – either that or it’s the convincing Miami beach décor. Celebs have always flocked to this venue, Bolthouse does Saturday Nights here and Dean May, Tommy Alastra, and other power promoters work Tuesdays.

Where: Lobby
9077 Santa Monica Blvd. | 310.275.4983
Who: Justin Timberlake has eyed the dance floor, Avril Lavigne has celebrated her nuptials with now hubby Deryck Whibley (Sum 41), Ian Ziering has made an appearance (90210’s Steve Sanders) Dennis Quaid, Greg Kinnear and others.
Why: It’s another SBE venue (along with Privilege and Hyde) where celebs can party somewhat untouched by the tourists and star-struck fans with expensive table service and a massive chandelier to boot.
Where: Hyde
8029 W Sunset Blvd | 323.655.8000
Who: Paris and friend Kim Kardashian, Brandon Davis (who gave L-Lo the moniker of ‘Fire-Crotch’), Jessica Simpson, Ashlee Simpson, Lindsay Lohan, Jason Statham, Benji Madden (Good Charlotte), Brody Jenner and on-again-off-again girlfriend Kristin Cavallari, Courtney Love, Elisha Cuthbert, Joe Francis of Girls Gone Wild infamy, Lukas Haas, and many more, Quincy Jones even made an appearance here. Best Yet LA’s resident D-List party girl was recently forced to wait outside of the velvet ropes as Paris sauntered and smirked her way inside. See the Video after the jump…
Why: Simple, it is so exclusive that the valet won’t park your care until they know you are getting inside, that and if Tara Reid can’t get in…well need I say anything more?
Where: Joeseh’s
1775 N Ivar Ave | 323.462.8697
Who: Mr. Belding – It’s so random I had to throw it in, he’s there many Monday’s dancing with the intoxicated 20-something’s who get a kick out of his somewhat creepy presence.
Why: The Monday night party is great – why Mr. Belding goes is a mystery to me.
