CP NEWS: The Vest is the New Stripey Shirt

Ever since the blazer replaced the stripey, fashion trailblazers have been plagued with the inevitable and everlasting burning question: What’s next?

The vest.

Contrary to popular belief, Justin Timberlake has not bought them all. All the gentlemen can bring sexy back in a cool vest this season. Think you can't pull it off? Here’s how you can sport it to fit your style and your club.

Hip-Hop Club

Wear a vest at a club like Savannah’s this weekend. Since it's dress to impress you will want to dress it up with nice slacks and shoes; Pradas are comfortable.

Over a sleek button down and a scarf in the collar the way the fellas did it at the 40/40 after the big fight, a vest will be a bigger hit than Mayweather in the ring. If you splurge on the shoes, go discount on the vest. Look at a thrift store, or try J. Crew.

Rock Club

Skinny or slim fit jeans, colorful sneakers, and a creative vest will be appropriately smashing with the sounds of Fall Out Boy or The Killers.



To truly funk up your vest, add some distinguishing features. Cut slashes, or add gold and silver pins (Jacks 99 cent world has a variety of sizes). If you splash paint in vivid fall colors across the back of your vest, even JT himself will be asking where you got it.

Reggae Club

Get a multicolored tailored vest in the colors of your hometown. For example, a green tailored piece with black pockets and yellow trim--then scream "Jamaica!" as you come through the door. (On second thought, don't.)

Purchase a Trinidad brooch from a local tourist shop and add it to either side of the vest.

Gay Club

Since this club gets hot, hot, hot (and I mean that literally) you want to keep it light.

You might catch someone walking around in just a vest (I would not advise) to keep cool.

But you can layer it on top of a sheer tee and add some long shorts and riding boots to bring a dressy feel to it.

An embroidered vest pairs nicely with a plain polo and keeps you equally cool while you down a pomegranate martini at a place like Splash.

Salsa Club

Any gentleman out to salsa is definitely invested in looking and smelling good, so you're already on your way.

You can wear a vest in any color and most styles (except the Chandler Bing sweatervest) if you have on the right scent and can move your hips like Shakira. While most guys will have on button downs, tunics and silk shirts (unfortunately satin too, eeeeeekkkkk!), a vest will be innovative and charming.

All you really need is the confidence of a salsa dancer. Everything else will fall into place. Spend less at Forever 21 where a simple buttondown vest runs about $30.

Dance Club

Since Dance clubs are about hard bass lines and upbeat jams, you’re bound to get at least one JT song.

So it’s quite all right to put it down like the man himself and stroll in wearing a tailored vest, pinstripes, or plain. Add a chain or don’t, like the $25 ones at H&M. Get it fitted. Women’s vests from Urban Outfitter which will only set you back $48 is great for this. No one will know its made for a woman but everyone will love the beautiful color.
