yeah... I had a few kids come up to me while playing Funk and scream, "That's mah momma's music!" I love exposing people to something new... no matter what the music is.

I think alcohol and rollerskates don't mix well for liability issues of the rink... but that wouldn't stop me from doing it! Let me know Suzanne. I will gladly play again... hopefully for a longer period of time.

From what I'm reading, the biggest problem seems to be the children and that can easily be corrected for the future...at least people aren't saying that they didn't like the dj selection, or the sound was crappy, or it wasn't well promoted, or that the price was too high...ya know... I'm sorry I couldn't make it, I thought it was a great idea...but you know I had my responsibilities at Pharmacy, etc.... I do have one comment though....any chance that you could negotiate two prices, one for those who want to skate, and one for those who don't??? I know it sounds silly, but there are people out there that say "I'm not going to skate, I just want to go and dance and hang out...and I can't justify paying that price (which includes skates) if I'm not going to skate"......even though we both know that once they get there and see everyone having a great time they are more than likely to want to purchase the skates (which you could have at a slightly higher price since they wanted to buy after-the-fact). That is my only idea, and I'm not even saying its a good one...cuz I'm sure you thought about that, and may have even discussed it with the venue.... anyway, I commend your efforts, your passion, and your drive...bless you!

jesus christ this thread is too long! my eyes are hurting from all the scrolling! just have to say this though: demographics does not in any way indicate racism. to say that is just plain stupid. in any business venture, you HAVE TO HAVE TO HAVE TO know what kind of people you are dealing with as far as ethnicity, gender, age, income, etc. it helps to know how you cater to them, make them repeat customers, and fine tune any problems you might have. here at UNT, the University Program Council members all have to turn in demographic reports after whatever program they put on, whether it be a lecture series, a movie, or a battle of the bands. they just want to know who's coming out and learn what they need to bring in bigger numbers plus a more diverse crowd. second, having a target audience helps you figure out you place. its called having a Market Niche. you know who you want to cater to and how to do it consistently. are you playing more for 25-30 year old higer income Plano residents? Or are you gearing more towards 21-25 year old low to mid income college students in Arlington? it helps to decide on venue, music selection, drink prices, drink quality, etc. you can't just come out and be like "I plan/play for EVERYONE!" because its not going to work the way you'd want it to. thirdly, stop taking the negative feedback so personally. yeah there's always gonna be dicks out there who will try to make you feel like the biggest loser on the planet when something fails but don't start going off and blaming everything from the DJs YOU BOOKED to the scene in Dallas in general. take it for exactly what it is: FEEDBACK. people are telling you what they liked and what they disliked. they liked the size of the venue but not the location. they liked the theme of the party but not that it was open to the public. you're getting your panties in a wad over shit that happens to ALL BUSINESS PEOPLE. if you don't listen at least a little bit then your basically damming yourself. end. |

One of the smartest things I have read as of late... except for one statement: Quote:
If you are a good DJ, you can make it work. This is why I always say that some of the DJs in town need to do some gigs like school dances, weddings, etc... you learn how to make it work no matter what. I know it's a whole different realm, but you learn from it.
