Man, I went on right before Josh, and my whole set was aggrivating as fuck. Kids throwing shit, yelling at me, shaking the little fence in front of the decks to make the record skip... I wanted to beat their 9 year old asses and rape their women.

oh I don't know about all that... but thanks!

It seems there are so many "DJ's" that forget they should be playing for the crowd (I am not pointing fingers at anyone, mind you... and I know this was a different situation)... But find a way to please your crowd. It can be done without comprimising what I play. For example... and JUST an example... if I am playing house music and I have an abundance of people asking for rap, I might throw the acapella of 'Drop It Like It's Hot' or 'Paul Revere' over it. Not my favorite songs, but if it helps to please the crowd...

anyway... my .02

I'm glad I played early in the evening.

Didn't mean to hijack these reviews.

well as much as I hate kids, at least they weren't out getting drunk or doing other unmentionable things that they should NOT being doing at their age..... rollerskating is a much safer thing for them to do on NYE imo, and I think it's good they had a place to go to to have fun at in a safe inviroment*shrug*

They were dry humping and booty dancing. Like, 8 year olds, doing that shit. It was the most horrific thing I've ever seen. Then they got into little throwdowns, beating the shit out of each other and rolling around on the floor. I felt like I was in a daycare in Compton.

and kudos to Mike for coming prepared.. even if he didnt know or even think about the crowd asking for rap (even though i bet he did) he brought some along anyway... and some badass rap at that... you dont need to play 50 Cent or some currently popular rap to appease the crowd, you could've played any good old school hip hop like Run DMC or Sugarhill Gang or whatever and i've never heard anyone say that Run DMC sucks

/preachy moment

thanks again!

and I played Sugarhill Gang too.

um no they should be playing for the people who came for the music that was promoted, no offense but i don't think this was planned very well.

point being the "promoted" event brought in more getto kids than it did bring in people who got flyers for it. One aspect of doing an event is knowing the demographic of your audience and if you do it in south Dallas and it's open to the public maybe you should have just gotten some hip hop and rap dj's.

The 'promoted' event didn't bring in the kids. the kids were there. the event was held on their 'turf'. I agree that it was somewhat of a conflict, but as a DJ, you come prepared for whatever. I knew it was open to the public, so I planned accordingly. I knew there would be kids. I know most kids these days are listening to dirty south and 'crunk' Rap music. I brought something that is a medium between what they like and what I want to play. I'm not discrediting any of the guys' opinions that played later in the evening because it sounds like they had a really rough time... and maybe didn't consider (or weren't informed of) what could transpire with the mixture of crowds.

Hahaa I used to be that asshole kid always asking the djs to play rap. It was a good idea and could possibly be a nice weekly for kids in that area. DJs would have to play hip hop and rap but can get creative with it.

cool idea, nice rink (and much props on the sound + lighting, guys! ), bad part of town (windows getting shot out.. ), obviousley didnt fall together that well..

said one black child to a white girl: fxcking white people music!

i can really only put up with so much ignorance... and these kids never stopped pushin it. from their inability to skate [and bringing footballs to a roller rink?!] to attempting to scratch while mary was spinnin...

i tried to make the best of it [because there was no way i could get my money back, sadly ]

met some cool people and got my dance on to some house, trance, + dnb..

Really there aren't enough hip-hop nights in Dallas that play a wide variety of music. Most of the dominate nights in this city adhere to a top 40 radio playlist. I'd like to see a night with a strong multicultural, diverse crowd. Mainstream alongside lesser known releases, New York Hip-Hop and even oldschoool. Honestly and sadly....we don't really have that in this city. There may be a couple nights yes but none of them have ever created that much of a buzz. Too many color lines, too many attitudes, and too many closed minds.

nyways back to the topic at hand...
It's hard to bring music like trance etc. into a crowd that frequents a rap venue. It just sounds like u guys had some bad luck or the promoter was really taking a risk with this venue. If they knew a large hip-hop crowd was probably going to attend they should've tried to throw some hip-hop into the mix to appease the regulars.
