Steve Lawler@The Church, Denver

I moved up to Colorado to work for the summer. I saw that Lawler was playing so I had to go check it out. The Church is a pretty dope club. It literally used to be a church and they converted it. The stained glass windows depicting Jesus kind of weirded me out after a few Heinekens, but I didn't let that stop me. On the main floor the DJ is up on a platform about 15 feet in the air overlooking the dancefloor. I couldn't get a good view but it was filled to the brim with equipment. The sound system was all JBL. There were 8 full range speakers mounted on the ceiling firing down on the dancefloor. Under the DJ platform was a stack of subs about 7x7 feet. They were pounding so hard I couldn't get close enough to see what they were loaded with. Lawler came on at around 11:30 and the place went nuts. I guess I expected him to play a monster tribal set filled with beats and drums, but the theme for the night was basslines. Every track he played showcased a nasty bassline. From what I could see, about 90% of his material was on CDs. I only saw him grab a record once or twice. The women were out in full force last night, god bless them. My only gripe was the dress code, or lack there of. I mean fuck bro, do you really have NOTHING else to wear but a wifebeater? Lawler didn't get to play too long. I guess the alcohol commision up here is way strict cus the lights came on at 1:45AM and he was off by 1:50AM. Overall I give the night an A-. I'm gonna check out Mark Farina Saturday night @ Vinyl. later guys
