![]() | The Laptop Deathmatch
Last night, I saw one of the most exciting local electronic music events I've ever experienced. It was single elimination tournament, with 16 competitors. Each was an electronic musician armed with a laptop computer, soundcard, midi controller, and the occasional instrument or microphone. Each competitor had 3 minutes to fuck it up in a live electronic "battle". The event took place at the gypsy tea room on Sunday the 11th. The turnout was really good for the small venue, but then again, there were 16 musicians, so all they had to do was bring a few friends each to get the numbers we saw. From the very first match, I was absoluely blown away by the consistant quality of both musicianship AND performance of most of the acts. I had no idea we had so many forward thinking local electronic artists. Contrary to most other types of "battle" events, this one was really tough to judge, and very often there was no clear cut winner, in my, and most of the crowds' opinions. Most of the music took the form of blisteringly fast and abbrasive IDM, but it was executed with a sense of proficiancy and grace I never would have expected in the fledgeling art of the live performance of this style of music. This is going to become a monthly event, and those interested can check it out at.. www.myspace.com/laptopdeathmatch Supposedly there's a "real" website on the way. I think the next one is a place called "cavern" or "the cavern".

these events are fun. i saw one of these events in seattle, sounded similar except they were not allowed any controllers other than the finger touch pad built into the laptop. it was very entertaining stuff. i think they called theirs "laptop battle". fun stuff. would have liked to go to this but i'm buried at work for the next 2 weeks unfortunately.
