![]() | Week In Review...
hello people!!! you just now have stumbled onto a weekly thread aptly titled, "Week In Review...", where I review the places I have been this week, not to mention the review of the scene at said establishment, the sound, people, etc; my perspectives (& for those that know me, I have some wild perspectives & I always have to put my $0.02, or $2.00 worth in)... but I'll give it to you (the reader) as straight up as I can... please, bear w/ me... Tuesday, July 2: The pouring rain drives me crazy!! I don't like driving in it, I don't like being out in it, I just don't like it!! Unless it's at home w/ some red wine listening to downtempo... Moosh shut down @ 12:15am, so alot of us that were there decided to go to BUMP @ Orchid... GOOD CALL!!!!! Remember what I said last week about the thrill of walking into a packed scene where everyone is dancing their asses off to some great music??? The Vibe just slapped me over the side of my head w/ it's purse as soon as I walked into Orchid!!! Paul Paredes was on decks for alittle while longer after I walked in & then Daddy J took over - here is a name that I've always have heard but never got to hear - & Jeez, I was not disappointed by any means what so ever... a great house (pure house!!) set by Daddy J w/ a LIVE trumpet player!!!! How cool is that???!!!! I danced my ass off all night!!! In between I talked to Paul Paredes & John Walker & gave them props for what they have @ Orchid!! Packed wall-to-wall, everyone smilin', everyone gettin' down to the music... what else could one ask for?? Daddy J was even mixing in some hip-hop at the end of his set!! WOW!! You don't hear that real often!! A GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREAT night had by all that I was w/ that night... I kinda see why we don't get business @ Moosh!! J/K Wednesday, July 3: No rain!!!! That's grrrreat!! Larry Granite (yes, that Larry Granite!!) & I decided to take a little trip over to Funkytown to check out Brillo & Darren DuVall @ Sol Y Luna in downtown Fort Worth, w/ their guest Nerio... there was a lot more people that came out tonight than usual (or was it the fact that July 4th was the next day??) & there was no audio chaos coming from the DJ equipment (last week there was no sound coming from the speakers when playing on the right turntable - but Wes took care of that problem!!)... Larry & I didn't stay long as we both met up @ The Village Station & good Mary Mother Joseph!!!! A line was stretched from around JR's to the back of the building from the entrance of The Village!!! We met up w/ Gabe (G3 Entertainment) & I could of sworn I was having flashbacks of The Village circa 1995 - 1998 when they had lines going around both sides of The Village... Gabe said the same thing... Inside was sheer pandemonium as a sea of humanity filled almost every square inch of the club inside (the only place where there wasn't alot of people was in the DJ booth where light guy Steve Barrientos & video guy Eric Thorenson were hangin' out at... the DJ equipment was brought down to the dance floor where the guest that evening was Brad F from Area 51... we all met up w/ Boo Bryant (who opened up the night) & Craig (Aqualight) in the Dj booth on the dance floor & then I turned my attention to the crowd & Brad F... this was only the second time that I've heard Brad ( the first @ 51 when Larry & Aqualight were in the bathroom spinning) & the set wasn't that bad... trance is NOT my thing, even though once upon a time it was - very short lived... Brad's mixing was on mark & he worked the crowd pretty well & he even played a track that I liked but haven't heard since '98 ("Seven Days & One Week")...Then Craig took over - he threw down the a ccapella of Creamer's & PQM's "Fuck Sonnet" to help bring down the BPMs for his next track & the crowd was going nuts over it!! Then Craig let them have it, esp. the unsuspecting Village virgins who frequent Area 51 who came out to see Brad F!! You could tell who they were because they LOOKED LOST!!!!!! They either ran or they let the music consume them & went w/ it!! Overall I did not think it was all that bad, which is going to shock alot of the people that I know because they know my stance on trance... Thursday, July 4: HAPPY 4TH OF JULY EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A night @ Orchid is always a good night for me... the crowd was more into it than last Thursday & there was even a fireworks show that happened outside the door of Orchid as a couple of us from Orchid were involved (we were breaking up a fight)... but that didn't ruin the night for us as we all kept partying till it closed... Doug debuted his track that night & I think it kicks ass!!! I hope to hear alot more from Doug D!!! It was just a great night all around as we all had fun & it was the first leg of three nights that The Thin Men had to endure for performing... Friday, July 5: HAPPY DAY AFTER INDEPENDENCE DAY EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Thin Men took their show on the road to the rooftop deck of The Lizard Lounge... That rooftop deck DJ setup is terrible!! There was no sound, at least sound where you can listen to!! They could've used AT LEAST 4 more Mackies/JBLs to give the rooftop more ass!!! It was hotter outside than it was inside!! (now that is MY problem right there!!) I didn't know that 106.1 was doing the Lounge on Friday nights!! I just don't know what to say!! aside from the tangent, Shawn, Doug D & Adrian threw down their set to the crowds liking (which consisted of pretty much the Orchid crowd!!)... But overall The Thin Men should've AT LEAST have gotten the Video Bar!! But I guess that, too, is MY problem!! After all of that a large herd of us (Doug D, Adrian, Patrick, Chivian, Cobias, & Co.) took a short swim to Seven to listen to Jay Winborn throw down some house & progressive choons... we danced our asses off until the lights came on!!! I haven't heard or seen Jay in a while so I'm glad we made the trip!!! Had fun @ Seven!!! Thanks Jay!! Saturday, July 6: For those that were expecting to see/hear me that night, here's what happened: due to the fact that I was out @ The Lizard Lounge on Friday & knowing that I work on Saturday mornings @ 7am & that I have been up since 10:30 am on Friday & haven't been to sleep since then, I tried to catch some ZZZs until 9:00pm (going to sleep @ 7:30pm) & I didn't wake up until 11:00am this morning!! Sorry people!!! I guess that's the price I pay for a good time not to mention wearing my body down like I have been known to do!!! Well there's the lowdown on the hoedown!!! I just want to give thanks/props to some people before I forget: Paul Paredes, John Walker(always great to see ya, brutha!!), Matt (4 Peace), Kevin Michael, Gator, Sarah P, Dallas_Homie, -jv-'s friend/guest DJ(Aaron) & all who was @ Moosh & Orchid on Tuesday, Wes, Brillo, Daroin, & all that was Sol Y Luna on Wednesday, Craig, Gabe & Chris (Gabe & Chris(Village Station, not sure of her title) thank you both for the last second accomodations for Larry & I on Wednesday night!!!), Mikey (Zuul), Larry, Boo, Brad F, & those who were @ The Village Station on Wednesday night, The Thin Men, Patrick, Miles (we finally meet!!) and those who were there @ Orchid, Edwin Watson, DJ Merritt, Bunny (Karen - we finally meet as well!!), Fernie(Blame - 'bout damn time we met!!) & Paul Proteus (Now I'm REAL glad that I came out on Friday & REAL glad that we met!!! PM me ASAP!!), Jeremy, Chrissie, Andrea, Solskei, Brian & Jay Winborn!!! ALSO Daddy J!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for taking time out to read this long thread of non-fiction ranting of the Dallas scene!! If anything (comments, ideas, gripes, etc drop a reply!! until then, thank you, & support your local record stores, support your local DJs, support your local hoes, & most of all... support the scene!!!!thank you for getting suckered into reading this, timmers BTW... Steve Barrientos (light guy @ The Village) & Eric Thorenson (video guy @ The Village) did an outstanding job @ The Village Station on Wednesday night!!! You guys helped make the night ROCK!!!

I had to put this somewhere and our kid Tim's Week in Review seemed as good a place as any... Last week was the kind of week that makes a young man think it might be worth sticking around this town. A Tuesday of BUMPin' and Mooshin' house (A new night out? Can I handle it?) bringing the thick sex vibe that with the weather can only be described as moist. A Thin Thursday full of slammin' tunes and an honest to god throw down fist fight with bloody mooks gettin' the rough treatment from bouncers, bartenders, djs, and the police. (Note to self: Where do I get me a harem? Is it the overpriced sunglasses or the wannabe Beckham do? Perhaps I should do some polling?) Friday night, Lizard Lounge... Hard trance and Nelly? Have fun, kids. I'll be on the roof. As Navin Johson could tell you, the Lord loves a workin' man so the Thin Men must be God's favorite djs. Per usual, they were throwing down to the utter delight of the faithful, and hopefully picked up a few converts on the way. If only I hadn't kept getting wrapped up in my glowstick strings... So is life. Made it to Seven for the last gasp of the night and what a gasp it was... By the time the music stopped, I had sweated through my Hawaii '82 tee like a true champ. Now if only I had a greasy pony tail and more sleeveless Versace Jeans cast offs... Saturday night found me bored and restless, and two dollar drinks from the good people at Orchid Bar were calling my name. Nice vibe sans violence this evening, and as I was about to bounce what do I see but Adrian and Sean Thin Men ambling in with record bags in tow. Serendipity? Its not just a terrible romantic comedy. It happens... Nice tracks building up to the on coming Bronco Bowl big room gig. But all was not right at the Gigglesnort Hotel... Oh well... Big ups to everybody who put their asses on the line for that one. The wheel of fortune continues to spin... Late night, you girls from Denver are yummy... And so it goes... Love to everyone I saw and met this week. I could name you all, but this is about me, damn it!
