I overheard your conversation on Technorati and thought I would chime in. I've known Steve Aydt at least as long as he's been coming to Disturbathon and he has always complained about it. I think at the root of things Steve is just a little bit prudish and prefers that wild and lurid orgies of the flesh be contained to the printed page rather than played out in real life. Steve complained bitterly about raves when our friends flirted with them in the late ninties. He insisted that they were a tired and meaningless regurgitation of things that were already banal and pointless when the disco era gave birth to them.

Contrary to popular belief, Disturbathon is much more about being a party than an art project. If we wanted to do something oblique and mysterious to the point of being opaque we could certainly very easily make it far, far, far more oblique and mysterious. The core of the design is to throw a fun party that is a little more intellectual than usual, a little more visceral than usual and a little more unusual than usual. Beyond that... I wouldn't get too obsessed about it... Its. Just. A. Party.

Drex is correct that the stripper room was designed and implemented almost completely by women. It probably could have used a dash more irony... but... misogyny was not an ingredient. The bathroom was merely the counterpoint to the party two years ago where we lowered the ceiling two feet forcing everyone to crouch. I guess if you are going to blame anyone for hating women then blame God for the way he configured the equipment. We were just following the old axiom... "as above, so below".

Hey, no worries, this is just a party review. As Drex has affirmed, some people had a better time of it than others. I hold no ill will to anyone who dares to do something other than a club or a bar party, since I myself love crazy parties.

I'd like to think that the issue of consent when it comes to pictures and touching would be something the core of people involved might be concerned about. It might not, that might be part of the severe underground nature of the party, "Disturbathon: So extreme you might even get raped!"

Many girls I knew at the event, and some guys, were either photographed, touched, or harassed in an unwelcome fashion. It got me to wondering if the lawlessness of the event doesn't unconsciously grant people a fictitious license to overstep their bounds. Because they see a bunch of people in fetish gear and being slapped, licked, or fucked, they assume that everyone there is in for a penny, in for a pound.

I could be polite and hold these things to myself, since I respect a lot of the people I know to be involved with the event and the idea behind the even itself, but I'm trying this whole radical self honesty thing. Take what you will from it.

My preference would be to steadily cull assholes from the event database. That is part of the motivation behind the electronic invitation process. Transitioning to a 100% invitation/referral event, however, requires a little care. This year the majority of the attendees were by solicited by invitation and we would like to increase that number.

As to your personal trials... I hate to fall back on the old "the way she dressed, she deserved it!" routine but going nude to the Dthon could definitely earn you a weenie grab. Nobody grabbed my weenie... not even me.

I have also been concerned about the rouge cameras, unfortunately the advancing state of cell phones makes this almost uncontrollable. I would like to see people take more of a masquerade approach. If you want to keep your identity a secret then see to your mask!

Maybe by asking first. Having an "ask first" policy in temporary autonomous zones is always a good rule of thumb, it ensures the parties present have the opportunity to opt out on something that violates their comfort zones. It's something that could be explained at the door as people came in to the party. Maybe not everyone would listen, but a larger majority would probably try to be respectful.

I didn't read all the reviews, and I don't care to. We almost went. I was very hesitant because I know there's just some shit I didn't care to see. And then Amy told me a story about something that happened that made me glad we didn't go.

Apparantly there was an amputee there who had his leg cut off at the knee. When he arrived he told someone that he had always wanted to stump-fuck someone. So this guy went and found another guy who was willing to be stump-fucked. At some point, a coworker of Amy's (Marie who can be ditzy) walked in and saw this guy with his leg up another guy's ass. It freaked her out because she didn't realize he was an amputee and she was trying to figure out how he had his whole leg up someone's ass. That's pretty funny. But seeing some guy stump-fuck some other guy in his ass is just not something that I want to see. Disturbing is the most mellow word I would use to describe it. Disgusting is a bit closer.
