OzzFest

Took my son to Ozzfest on Saturday. A rocking good time was had by all.

The rumored demise of Metallica is greatly exaggerated. They were fine form (they went on at 9:45 and went off around 1:00 am) and the several songs they played off their new disc were very good, very metal and dare I say it...a little funky?

If they come back to DFW I would highly recommend a viewing. I will be (legally) downloading their disc when it comes out in September.

1 - Devildriver slaughtered every other band that performed at Ozzfest, including Metallica, hands down.

2 - How the F did Serj Takaicasodiknbvawhateverhisnameis get that timeslot? Should have switched him and Hellyeah (who were good and didn't play long enough).

3 - Someone just needs to put Ozzy out of his misery. Off key, forgetting lyrics, and can't seem to say anything else except for "Everyone go crazy.". It was sad.... :\

Good to hear. They were great at Bonnaroo a couple months ago. Whether you like their CDs or not, they put on a hell of a show.

meh. so so. couple of pantera tunes and wish you were here cover. they didn't introduce who was playing what, which would have made it more enjoyable, as it was a bit difficult to see the stage from where we were and instead of focusing on the stage for the projection screens they showed footage of dime. and it could have been longer.... enjoyable, yes, but i wanted more, and it seems really hapharzardly put together as they took fooooooorrrrrrrrrrever between songs and lineup changes.

I do not doubt that in the least. To be honest, they were really the only band I wanted to actually see there this year, but I figured i'll wait till they come back to a small venue and not deal with the over priced clusterfuck that is ozzfest.

How did the crowd like them?

It was freaking hot as heck!!! Drank tons of bottled water all day and night. Metallica and Ozzy were awesome as usual, sound quality was better than the previous bands. Wish the sound quality was better for the previous bands such as Cavalera Conspiracy. Kingdom of Sorrow played some heavy riffs. Lot of crowd congestion to get from stage 2 and 3 back to the main stage. Parking was unorganized, had to park in dirt/gravel with no one around to guide traffic. Dimebag tribute was fairly lame in that it really didn't evoke the kind of sentimental emotion that was probably intended, no intros, long gaps in transitions between performers. Ozzy's guitarist Zakk Wylde is bad ass

as far as i observed they had the biggest pit of any performance of the day. shit was creating a vortex of dust in front of the stage that was truly amazing to behold. i'd love to see them in a smaller venue myself. seems like every time i catch them is at ozzfest though.

I was gonna wait to post pics and video before I reviewed but seeing as how Im a lazy bastid, I'll just review now.

Got there around 3:30. Surprisingly we were able to park pretty close; although the parking fee was hefty - $20!

We got to our seats in time to see Cavalera Conspiracy. - They played at the same time as Devil Driver and seeing as how Devil Driver comes here a lot more than CC, I chose to hear CC b/c I think everything Max does is badass. Their set was great.

After that we decided to walk over to the other stages but there wasn't really anything good going on so we went back to our seats, which by the way, were strategically bought so that we were in the shade the entire time. THANK GOD

Heres the rest of the bands I saw -

Johnathan Davis
- I was totally bored. His voice is just whiney to me now. I liked the early Korn stuff but his solo stuff does nothing for me.

Hell Yeah - pretty good set. Chad is a badass singer no doubt. Although it makes me sad to hear him sing cheezy shit like "Alcohol and Ass" cuz I think as a poet he is much deeper than that.

Dimebag Tribute - I'm with Kiri, it was confusing b/c they didn't introduce anyone. I really enjoyed watching Kerry King jam with Kirk Hammett though. And I thought it was really badass that they incorporated King Diamond into all that business too, seeing as how he lives in Frisco and is a big part of Texas metal as a whole. The video at the beginning was cool and did bring a tear to my eye.

Serj Tankian - not a bad set but I prefer him with System of a Down. I don't think he was really laced at the right timeslot either b/c by that time in the day things were moving in a heavy/fast fashion and his stuff was more theatrical/moody. He should have played earlier.

Ozzy
- All you people who were complaining about ozzy must not have seen him last year b/c last year he was really bad. So bad that he apologized to the crowd. I thought he sounded 1000 times better this year. Honestly, hes old and hes done lots of drugs and I think the touring was wearing him out. He had tons more energy this year and sounded better. His intro was fucking hilarious. I found a video of it for those who want to see it -

Ozzy Intro.
You need to upgrade your Flash Player
You gotta love his sense of humor. He played for a looooooooong time though. The fireworks after his set was a nice touch

Metallica - The last time I saw them was at Texas Stadium in 1992 with Guns and Roses and Faith No More. James Hetfield needs to work on his crowd talking/front man skills but I was really glad to hear all their songs again. They have so much good, old material. Harvester of Sorrow was my favorite hands down. I had forgotten how fucking sick that song is. I think overall they sounded pretty good/tight. I really love that they brought King Diamond on stage with them.

Venue - 1000 times better than Superpages.com center IMO. The people who were working were actually friendly! They have more choices of food and drink. They have AIRCONDITINED BATHROOMS. Hell yeah. Its nice to escape in there and cool down for a few minutes when you're dealing with that kind of heat and humidty.

Overall I had a really badass time.

BTW, have any of you heard the Scars On Broadway album? Its two of the other guys from System and its really badass. It blows Serj's solo stuff away IMO. If you get a chance, check it out.
