![]() | DETOUR in 8 bit @ The Cavern
What a pleasant surprise this was! It was really original quality electronic music all night. I caught all of Kashioboy and only bits of the other acts. So, Kashioboy took us on this journey though many different styles and tempos that all worked suprisingly well with the choice 8 bit nintendo-esc samples that were layered on top. It started out kinda hard and glitched-out, heavy on the signature 8 bit sounds, which got everyone interested, then got down right melodic with smooth beats and more polished but still very video gamish bleeps and blips sprinkled in. He had a projector showing all sorts of old japanese nintendo games intercut with other visual candy. Thoughout the show he used all of the following as either a midi controller or an instrument: original NES, original Gameboy, Gameboy Advanced, Nintendo DS, and a PSP. I didn't recognize any of the programs running on the laptop, but whatever it was, it sounded great. I've caught wind of this 8-bit retro sound before, but had never heard it done so well before. Very original, very awesome. When I saw him pulling out all that gear, I had to ask him what his plan was with all that. He wasn't very interested in talking about but was very polite, kinda like "just wait and see." Dood also does curcuit bending stuff, but doesn't take it on the road. I had to bounce on down the street for a shortly after Kashioboy, but Adventure sounded dope too, from what I heard. The housier stuff before KB was hott too. Big up to them Denton boys. The art from Ariel Bender that night was pretty choice too. I was partial to a particular piece that featured an 80's Prince with a red headband, and Delorian.

dude, Kenny, nice review. thanks for coming by and checkin out something different. there was definitely a feeling of newness in the air last night, great talent of all types, performers and audience, comin together and building something greater than any one person. and your right, That's What's Hot (the housier dj boys from denton) have been turning the heads of the heads as of late. their knowledge of dance music's past really shows.
