![]() | Alan Braxe last night
Thought I may as well write up a review of a show I attended here in Sydney last night. Alan Braxe performed last night at a club in Kings Cross (a suburb of Sydney's east, notorious for being seedy) called YU. Cover was pretty cheap, being $22 AU, but it was all ticketed only so I got mine 3 weeks prior to the show. I got there at 10:30 after getting off from the Kings Cross rail station, and a local Sydney DJ named Ben Morris was providing the warm-up. Tunes were great, and the mixing was flawless. Granted the crowd wasn't in its full force, but the vibe was still positive. He played until 1, and that's when Alan Braxe came in. Expectations were high from me, since this guy is a fucking legend in the French house scene. Played a 3 hour set that consisted of a myriad of classics and recent house tunes, such as Alive, Intro, Don't Go Away, White Knight Two, This Boy's In Love, and of course, two mixes of Music Sounds Better With You. Although the track selection was wonderful, the mixing was not, however. Marred with technical problems stemming from overheating according to a post on InTheMix.com.au, Braxe seemed like he wasn't trying at all when it came to seamlessly mixing. It was as if he was trying to imitate Tiesto with his awful mixing efforts. The mixing was all late-entry, and it was quite evident when he tried to mix in This Boy's In Love which was crap, in other words. While I enjoyed hearing a nice thrashing of French house tunes, the performance though left me a bit disappointed, coming from someone as legendary as Braxe himself. The crowd, despite the shortcomings stemming from the technical issues, still provided a joyful and amazing vibe, with so much hands jumping in the air, just like the good old days with house music haha. The crowd was pretty friendly, and met heaps of cool people who were shocked to meet a 'seppo' who was partying to some decent music (since they all thought we Americans listen to shitty pop music for the most part lol). I'm not that disappointed because I didn't feel hosed from the cheap cost of the show, but I still expected a bit much coming from someone like him. Left the club at 4:30, and walked from Kings Cross to the nearest bus station to wait for the bus to take me back to my apt. I'm glad I did because an hour later at the Kings Cross station, some guy got stabbed, again, in the chest over a fight. Can't wait until next weekend, with Concord Dawn playing on a ship at Sydney Harbour as a DNB boat party. |

Hell, it would suck to be a sole woman walking on Darlinghurst St. at Kings Cross. | |
