I give it a 1/2 Meh!

I don't wanna be a total dick and say it totally sucked because it didn't "Totally" Suck.

Maybe it's because I'm Jaded, but I wasn't expecting much at all. And I didn't get a whole lot, but I wasn't totally upset.

We were supposed to meet some "old" friends at Ghostbar. I wasn't happy about that in the beginning because the first time we tried to go there (not long after it opened) was a "very" unpleasant experience. I figured it might have gotten better, but I started checking out all of the reviews online and they were 90% bad. All kinds of complaints from cheeze factory clientele to ripoff drink prices, to out of this world cover charges (for men only). Luckily the creator of our "old" friend night out got the same info and the venue was changed. Several ideas were suggested and since most involved the nightmare which is Greenville Ave traffic & Parking... we said "Hellz Noooo". So, we were on to Lotus Bar on McKinney Ave....

Here's the rundown:

We ended up there around eleven and the McKinney traffic was already getting pretty bad. To our surprise the Lotus Valet was NOT full and we didn't have to wait 1 second (valet was $8). We walked right in. There was no line and NO cover charge.

The decor was super nice, the music (for a while) was as expected and things were calm but Too Loud.

Initially we sat on some couch for about 30 mins with no issues. Later the "important" guy with the earphone in his ear (like CIA or Secret Service) came over and informed us that the couch we were sitting on was
"reserved" for a bottle service reservation. Not sure the price of "bottle service" on Saturday but I did find out that Tues-Thurs is $200. [No Thank You!!!].

So we moved around for a while and about the time I was gonna say let's get the hell outta here, a small picnic type table opened up near the front door. We all sat down and started getting decent service from a good waitress named KAT.

Overall, the place is very nicely setup but "very, very" small. I'd say about 1/2 to 3/4 the size of the old Orchid Bar/Lounge in Deep Ellum. The drink prices were not bad (except the "bottle service" bit)... about $4-$7 for various mixed drinks, beer and/or wine.

Now, since the place is so small, I'd say that probably 50 people would be perfect, but by 11:45 it seemed that twice that many were inside and about that many people were either on the outside patio/bar area or in line. By 12:30 I stopped trying to count, it was ballz to the wall. If you were out anywhere in Dallas last night you would know that is was hot and humid as a motherfucker, so the patio wasn't an option. After 2 years in Iraq, I'm not going to stand around in the heat and humidity if I don't have to.

Back to the music. Although I expected to hear a bunch of Top 40, 80's, & 90's electro and hip hop mashups... I did not expect the DJ to suck so bad. I realize that the clientele did not seem to care that he was ate the fuck up, but shouldn't any DJ worth his salt at least "try" a little bit?

Earlier in the evening this guy "seemed" to give a shit and was doing some decent beatmatching mixes with Delerium "Silence" etc. (well maybe he wasn't mixing for real... I don't know)...

But when he started all the "popuar" mashup 80's-90's-HipHop type music he would change the music by "mixing" or some shit ... like right in the middle of a fucking chorus or phrase. I mean, no matter how bad a track you are playing sucks, you never... ever just drop the shit out and start playing a totally different track/especially a totally different genre track. I mean the phrase or chorus of what is playing couldn't go on for more than 1-2 minutes before you can get out of it.

I know, I know it's always annoying to go out to a club with a DJ friend, but even my "non dj" and "non former raver" friends were like.. "Huh, that's weird, what's up with that?"

I mean, why even "have" all of that expensive ass equipment if that's all your gonna do? You could literally let drunk motherfuckers bring their iPods & iPhones in if that's all your gonna do.

And if anyone knows this "dj" and he's like slightly mental or slow or something, please let me know and I'll apologize immediately.

~AND~ if you are totally into the Top40 mashup Radio thing... you would never have noticed this from the dj. So, don't let my review stop you from going. It's a pretty nice place overall.

Huh, I just figured that their dj did the whole track flipping all night. I have never been, but just assumed that is what they did at most bottle service places. I think David dj's there on Thursdays.

Maybe so I'm not sure man, that's why I was curious. I know the drunk uppity types didn't really care and I suppose it's better than a train wreck.... But I didn't get it, finish the chorus at least.

LMFAO though, at watching the drunk uppity types sorta stop their little bounce for a few seconds while they try to figure out what just happened to the song they were trying to sing & dance to. Then they would forget about it pretty quickly and start the bounce.. Heee... Heeee. it's like an expiriment in human sheeple-ism or something

~~and like I said, the fact that there was NO COVER and the drinks were not super EXPENSIVE is a pretty BIG compiment in this town these days. So, unless you just hate the Electro, Top40 mashup, with a little classic dance mixed in... you should still go. Just make sure you get there just before 11 so you can get situated before the "drunk uppity types" get there. Oh, and don't get too excited about a track you might like... you could get confused. Don't worry, it's not the alcohol messing with your ears.

dude...we used to get in trouble for how loud we played there.....and it was NEVER loud. Kat is a very cool chick, and the barstaff that worked on Wed night was always really cool with us.

HOWEVER

there are definatley certain elements of upper management(ownership) that are not at all cool and can make it very difficult to have fun there. But as a general rule of thumb, you should just go ahead and rule out anything on mckinny ave on a friday or saturday when looking for fun
