![]() | LA dnb! Dara/DB/Gridlok @ Qtopia
TURBOSOUND OWNS YOUR ASS. Although it wasn't EQ'd properly, I heard the potential in that soundsystem. Wooha that would've been some heart stopping bass. Anyway, First off, the club. Free, secured parking, with no line to get into the place. I think we got there around 11:30 or so, so the line had disspiated. This place was HUGE! It was probably about twice the size of Tree's, plus it had 2 other rooms that weren't in use. When we got there, ther ewere about 400 kids dancing and rocking out to Gridlok. First off, circles in LA get *BIG*. And there are usually a lot of them. But I wasn't really impressed with much of the breaking I saw. We've got local b-boys that could show 'em up. The show was all ages, so it was a mostly under 18 crowd. One strange thing is that there were NO LIGHTERS! Is it the fact that you can't smoke inside can't smoke inside any establishment in california, or is it that just don't get it? Well, what I heard from Gridlok was ... interesting. Not my style. Very hard, very techy and abstract. The local MC, John Dada was pretty dope I must admit. Right up there with the mighty MC Eye. He was definatly keeping the kids in it, and apparently had some mic problems and disappeared for a while. Uhm, as we all know, DB sucks. I think I counted 5 trainwrecks and 9 backspin mixes from him. I wasn't really impressed with the tracks that he played until he started playing the more atmosphereic stuff. Dara on the other hand, WORD UP! He completely covered the specturm of DnB, but the kids just didn't get it at all. He dropped many a great tune and kids just stood their like "what's this?" while me and Simone rocked out. I was the *ONLY* lighter in the place, and kids gave me funny looks for puttin' up my lighter. But I was 'avin it so i didn't care. DB came back on after dara played for about an hour and we left after that. The club overall was very cool, but could've used more lights and lasers. It was big, clean, bathrooms clean too. Water was $3 a bottle, and there was no smoke. It was kind of cool. My over all impression of the LA DnB scene is good, it just needs a bit more work. I hope to go out there again soon and see another act. Maybe I'll pass out lighters too =)

Probably 600 kids @ $10 a head. Apparently it's not *that* tight. I talked to a few of the guys at the local record stores, and of the 4 we went to 3 were strictly house for the most part except for a tiny backstock of DnB. And the other was hiphop only. So I dunno. There were a lot of kids out, but I saw a ton of shady kids too. But the only store that I heard about that really sells dnb is beatnonstop, which I didn't have a chance to hit up. I was sucked in by FatBeats. On a side note, Or locals are pretty big out there! Demarkus is blowup LA and Merrick Brown is well known out there as well. FairPark records is well represented in LA! Aaron Michaelson (this is music) and Gabriel Ortega (wax) had nothing but good things to say about the house and techno coming out of Dallas!

John Dada is very dope; he also goes by the alius of Infiltrata in his production and mixing. I remember Sarah bringing him here back in the summer and that was still probably the best show at the Sandbar I've ever been to outside of some of Flaco's parties. At the end of the night, he was still ready to tear the place up, a grin on his face and his fingers threatening to twist the knobs once more before the bartender came up and stopped him.
