d.verz METRO @ hookah

Thanx to everyone that came out to the hookah this wknd for METRO. Honestly, with all the fun things planned for that night I expected to be flying solo this time. People told me I should cancel this month’s Last Saturday Show cause of all the other action.

Said I had a previous commitment to my guests and a responsibility to provide a quality show with variety and a good vibe. But I’m not always as optimistic as I appear to be, so I kinda scaled back (cause I’m NOTORIOUS for biting off more than I can chew, but I just love the over the top chaos of a big show).

So, I didn’t go crazy with expensive lights or sound (sorry about the sound dropping off for a few minutes during jahko & obeah’s set… very glad my sweety is so good with electricity that the bar didn’t have to call that electrician after all). As usual we exposed only local art & dj talent, but I wanted to do something different than the massive. Sure, when it gets warmer I will thro a free field party (cause u cannot control the perimeter of a field, I’v snuck into enuf to know).

Didn’t want to even attempt to compete with Mystik cause I respect the effort it takes to try to pull a massiv like that off. So I tried to offer a completely different feel & vibe from what they did (dallas is big enuf for both events). Something more intimate with very modern art and music. There are only a few ppl who are aware of downtempo or reggae driven dnb & jungle.

Decided last week to quit being down about an unknown future & just do my best. Made up my mind to build it & at least I would come, maybe for once even get to dance & chitchat at my own damn show. I figured my luck had run out & accepted that I probably wouldn’t break even this month.

Still in shock. I was not lonely on Saturday at all. It wasn’t the crazy madness the d.verz shows are typically (not the wall-2-wall squeeze thru the place action all nite, just for part of the evening). Ppl came & they liked the art so much we even sold a piece on the spot (dan’s drawing of hunter thompson), 2 more may go this week (which is a first for the shows at this venue). Ppl really got off on the reggae action in the back. Lots told me that had never heard it like this, modern & hard but still rasta (guess they never caught the battletech crew at royal rack b4 the move). I broke even, paid everyone I was supposed to & had just enuf left over for 5 a.m. pancakes at ihop and a tank of gas.

mad props to the METRO DJs: Mason, Obeah, Mekanix (& special guest Mark Miller), Squiky, Deceptakahn & Logic Theorist (the afterhours set with the laptop/1200 tagteam was really original and such great trax) all interpreted reggae in their own modern way. Aoi, Jahko, Jason Thompson, Matt Brock & Kletus all gave the front lounge a swinging, funky hipness that lasted till we kicked the last few ppl out at 4 a.m.

thanx to all the artists who showed this month for trusting me to exhibit their work in an alternative venue. It looked great & I loved watching ppl respond to their stuff. Love to Dawn Higbee, Laura Abrams, Nick Matthis, Brandy Garrison & Daniel Aeon McGarvey…. o o o & we cannot forget Chad Preslar for busting out his 1st grafitti work on a canvas and letting us hang it!!

Didn’t have a full door crew cause so many braved the cold to see their favorite national acts, but I must appreciate everybody who gave me a break from it (Aphrodite, Aoi, Mason, Leaha, Jennifer, Frank & JD). Rachel is my hero for bringing me a blankie at 2:30 (and offering to burn copies of her digital pix from that nite). But Daniel is definitely my superhero of the nite for rescuing the sound so quickly.

So nice to see hernando there with the vid camera in hand, last month’s vid of AFTERGLO was really nice. We’ll post his video from last month on the website soon soon soon.

Speaking of which, I’ll be posting the pix from METRO by the end of this week (the one’s in the metro folder today are actually from AFTERGLO). & yes we are DEFINITELY improving on the site a bit at a time (this week I’ll add METRO pix & put CAPTIONS on all the pix). we’re also sorting them into categories like DJs, Crowd, Art, Fire and getting some graphics & stuff to make the site more visual. it just takes time & $$, the 2 things I have the least of.

www.solutionvii.com/d.verz_events
(why do I have such a long website addy? Cause I am poor & it is cheaper this way. Rather do things slowly than hafta charge more than $5 cover)

check us out next month on the last Saturday of April for the next d.verz event at the hookah (or join the email list for details on the free 4/20 party, which will not have directions to the location on draves)

Hey Bubu is bootleg
Lots of fun, the back room was rocking and the art as always was exceptional.
It honestly wasn't the crowd that I thought would listen to Ragga, was I pleasently surprised though.
Only down side, I got there too late and missed Adams set. Next time for sure though

Keep 'em parties coming I'll be there for every single one of them.

i had a great time! the dj setup was unreal for such a small place...you had every gadget in the book all daisey-chained together like a matrix of audio insanity!

i really enjoyed all of the art, especially all of Brandy's black n white's...very nice stuff

thanks to everyone involved...see u next time!
