![]() | Turntablism/DJing/skill (swamp)
So I'm reading a lot of the review threads about last night, and I'm seeing a lot of people saying Swamp's set was wack. These are the same people who for the most part go off on how wonderful some local DJs are who are not anywhere near as skilled. So here it is. Any monkey can stand behind turntables and beatmatch records. Those same monkeys can order tunes online. What Swamp did (and other turntablists do) is creating music with a turntable. I saw him make a beat several times with a record, juggle (rearrange a beat with 2 copies of the same record), produce entire guitar lines out of one guitar note on a record (including "no sleep till brooklyn"), flip a record over mid-scratch and start scratching on the other side WITHOUT MISSING A BEAT, creat a beat by lifting and dropping the needle on certain parts of the record, and the list goes on. If I practiced 5-10 years I might just begin to be able to do what he did last night. I know that this post will have no effect on most of you, you'll continue to say "wack" and worship DJ Irene, but hey, if one person understands and respects what turntablism is mebbe I've made a difference. I'm gonna go get back on my decks now and practice my juggling (and eat my wheaties). -Phill P.S. wanna learn more? www.turntablism.com www.asisphonics.com |

Well, I totally agree. I loved swamp's set. it was phat. But i appreciate the talent that scratching is. A lot of people listen to the music overall. I do that as well. But i also analyze every tactic the DJ uses to output the sounds. So, while, In mine and yours (and a couple other people) eyes, it was dope - people are entitled to their opinion. If they don't want to appreciate what the DJ is DOING, but they just want to appreciate what they are LISTENING to, thats their deal. Just my $.02 -Michael (Harsh Reality Crew) |

is this thread the love child of our conversation last night...i am not doubting his skill. i mean, he did a VW commercial. *averts eyes* i think his record selection was terrible, i think with the right music he could possibly get my seal of approval. oh, and whoever the guest dj was that spun with squirt and chris; that fool was amazing! the way he slapped the records to get that twangy effect, i stopped dancing and just gazed in awe for a moment. i had fun.

I thought swamp was pretty fucking badass!! Jolen Essex threw it down pretty hard as well!!! Joshua Ryan, pretty good. Hardkiss's set was a bit lacking. Saratonin Ripped it up. And although I really don't like Irene, I would still have to admit that she threw it down pretty hard. |

Swamp kicked ass last night and if you ask me he got the crowd ready for IRene. IF it wasn't for Swamp doing what he did then I don't think the crowd would had been jumping like they did for her set. I was freestyling to his beats while breakin in the circle. I don't like it when people get on the bandwagon for a popular DJ. Don't say he was wack what he did was different.

Since I'm the one who deemed his set wack, I suppose I should clarify my opinion. What made me say that was not his djing so much as his on the mic action (whether you want to classify it as singing or rap, I'll leave that up to you). I didn't stay very long after he started in on that, so I can't really say one or way or another as to what happened after that. Don't get me wrong, he's a good dj and a very skilled turntablist. However, turntablism, well, gets less impressive every time I hear it/see it. Maybe it's because all too many people think scratching is so badass, that I just don't care to hear it. Or maybe it's just the actual practice of turntablism. I suppose I really don't mind a little bit of it, or say watching somebody do it, but it gets to a point that it's ad nauseum with me personally. Especially when I'm in the mood to dance rather than stand around watching somebody spin. I respect the practice, I just disn't care to hear a set full of turntablism and wack mic action. But I don't worship Irene.
