| Asbestos in popcorn ceiling? ARGH!
So I am all set to start scraping off my popcorn ceiling in the new house, when I read that houses built before 1979 could contain asbestos in the popcorn ceiling. Home Test Kits take about two weeks to process. I found a guy locally that can test in 24 hours, but costs about $85. I want to do this ASAP as I want to get it done so we can paint the house this weekend. ANyone have any experience with this

How do they get all the popcorn up there? Is there a popcorn blowing machine?

Shit that explains my retardation. I've been living in a house built in the 1940's since my birth.

| Crazy as fuck. |
I used to removed asbestos from commercial buildings & to do that we'd have to suit up in an approved full body suit & face mask. There was more to it then just wearing a mask b/c the fibers can go EVERYWHERE. Find out if it IS actually asbestos first, if it is, then you'll have to have someone remove it... most likely it is NOT. Usually new homes are inspected before being sold & there will be a knowledge in the specs if there is any lead-based paint, tile mastic or asbestos used in the construction of the home. Asbestos isn't poison, it's a tiny fiber that gets into yr lungs. Asbestos or NOT yr going to have to do something to control the dust that comes from removing that popcorn. The best thing to do is buy enough plastic (it is called poly at home depo) to keep the dust in one area, wear protect clothes & a mask AND googles. Since your wrote there was paint on there - oh fuck, your going to have to do a LOT of fucking working on it. If you want, my brother owns an environmental remediation company & he charges $15-25/sq to remove asbestos from private homes. Just find out if it is asbestos first. OSHA has a great site for more info about asbestos http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/asbestos/

Turns out I don't think there is any paint on them, after I took a sample to get it tested. Maybe just in a couple spots that have been repaired over time. Hopefully there is no asbestos, and I can do my scraping tomorrow when I hear the good news. I have a very good idea from my research online how to do it. Thanks you guys.
