I dont think people are so much afraid of a microphone per say as they are when you put them on the spot and they have the attention of an entire crowd.

Hence its not the microphone that scares them, but the fear of looking like an idiot in front of a group of people.

This is true. However, I sometimes try to get folks to record vocal parts for me whether it be for a song or for a commercial. In an isolation booth. They clam up immediately. I'd save a lot of money on voice talents if my wife would just say some shit for me.
