I'll be honest, Sarah. Without food or water or a doghouse for rainy days being abuse, sure, I can dig. Some of the dogs I've seen in even Plano NOT being on a chain? Nonsensical.

Having a dog on a chain for most of its life would kinda defeat the purpose of owning one in my opinion. I thought most people wanted a PET, not a status icon or a collector's item.
I don't like the fact people leave them in their backyards for life, but that's not going to change anything. At least give them a dog house for when it gets cold, hot, and/or rainy if you plan on keeping them that way.

A chain is just completely uncalled for.

ours is on the right. we used to fight him, but he's getting older. we thought it would be best to retire him while he was on top of his game.

Man, I hate putting Bruno in his kennel at night. I can't imagine keeping the little guy on a chain 24/7.

I hear this. The people who live behind our next door neighbor do this to their pit, the poor thing. But fortunately they do go outside and play with it every day, and he does have a nice, big dog house. Only thing is, I think it's illegal according to state law to keep a dog chained between the hours of 10p and 6a, and if it is to be chained during the daytime, I believe the owners must use a tether and not an actual chain. So technically they are breaking that law.

I hate chains too.

We've NEVER kept a dog on a chain and it breaks my heart to see it. It ALWAYS has hurt me to see it.

I volunteered @ the SPCA and there was this dog in there who had been chained his entire life. So long, in fact, his collar had never been adjusted and it had grown into his neck. They had to surgically remove it. The surgery required him to have a large open wound with tubes for drainage.

I've told this story before.

That was the sweetest dog there. I would go over and rub his little paw with my finger (thru his little cage) and he would put his head down like he was chillaxin'....and when I would stop, he would do this faint little whimper and lift his head up. He was precious and my heart just ached for him. I wished I could have taken him home.

In Dallas it's illegal to keep them chained between those hours. You might mention it to them?

our dog stays on a chain during the day, because he is an escape artist, and can jump the 6ft fences.

but the "chain" is plastic coated, and about 30 ft long - long enough for him to go anywhere in the backyard without getting all the way to a fence

What are even worse are the people that force their dogs to do work. Some dogs are forced to herd livestock, pull sleds, locate people who are missing, and some even assist hunters in tracking game.

We tried, and the owner/man of the house acted like he didn't speak English when we confronted him, which I know is total pig crap. I reported it to the City, and nothing, so I reported it to the Texas SPCA about a week ago. Supposedly they are going to be investigating it. The dog is happy and isn't abused, but I feel so bad for it when it's cold and rainy outside, and here my dogs are curled up in front of the fireplace inside. Like I said it has a dog house, but *technically* the chain is illegal, since its an actual chain and not a retractable tether tie-down.
