| People who keep their dogs chained up in the backyard in the cold
Keeping them on a chain is horrible enough, but keeping them on a chain in the cold, with or without shelter, is beyond cruel. I get e-newsletters from a nation wide group non-profit called Dogs Deserve Better that works to keep dogs chain free. They help build fences, provide dog houses, leave information and in some cases take relinquished dogs and place them in foster homes until the dogs are adopted. It breaks my heart every time I get one of the emails and see all of the cases listed on their website. A lot of these dogs are chained for life, never bathed or touched, given no love, exercise or veterinary attention. I don't understand. If you are just going to chain or pen them up in your backyard what is the point of having a dog? I also don't understand the term "backyard dog". Again, why do you have one if you are going to throw it outside and leave it there? I guess it's supposed to be a guard dog? You don't think people can get into your house through somewhere other than your yard? Just FYI, if you are a person, that lives in the City of Dallas, who chains your dog up it is illegal to chain them between the hours of 10pm-6am, in extreme weather conditions, in conjunction with a pinch or prong type collar, and/or without food and water. It is now illegal to chain a dog AT ALL in the City Of Irving. Hopefully one day that will be a nationwide law. If you are one of these people, please think about bringing them inside or placing them with another family that will. It's not fair to them. It also risks the life of people who wander into your backyard. When you leave these animals with no social interaction they can become dangerous. If you see anyone breaking these laws PLEASE call the police and report them. A life depends on it and it takes 5 minutes. http://dogsdeservebetter.org/home.html Also, Dogs Deserve Better has a sponsor a dog program every X-mas for all of the dogs still in foster homes. Their goal this year is to provide $100 gift cards for all of the dogs, on top of the toys and/or gift baskets people donate. The gift cards go toward food, vet bills, etc., that the foster family is responsible for. If you can even donate even just a few dollars please do. For many of the dogs in foster homes they are receiving attention for the first time in their lives. Some have been chained for 6 months, so have been chained for 10 years.

That is sad. Why get a dog if you are only going to chain him up? I would never leave me dog outside all day. Some dogs are not so smart & they get tangled in the chains. My dad's neighbor keeps their chihuahua outside 24/7. The dog is not even allowed inside the house. Poor thing. Again why get the dog if you are not going to care for it. One of my dogs sleep in the bed with me. |

It's also about the dogs not recieving any socialization and killing children that wander into the yard. Almost 200 children have died that way in the past couple years. Did you bother to read the entire post or you picked one thing out of it like usual? I guess it's okay to live 12 years of your life within a 7 foot radius.

| Yeah, its pretty funny that dogs are chained up for their entire lives and left to die. A real riot.

A lot of times people get dogs who cannot afford them, and who also cannot afford to care for them or give them the proper attention and/or love, causing the dog's demeanor to be all sorts of jacked up, resulting in the owner chaining them up and leaving them outside for most of their lives, because they don't give a fuck anymore. It's sad. It you don't have time for a dog, or money to care for it, don't fucking get one. Tell your kids NO. Dumbasses.

| Not saying that it is totally applicable here, but you get the idea. I'll be honest, Sarah. Without food or water or a doghouse for rainy days being abuse, sure, I can dig. Some of the dogs I've seen in even Plano NOT being on a chain? Nonsensical. Having a dog on a chain for most of its life would kinda defeat the purpose of owning one in my opinion. I thought most people wanted a PET, not a status icon or a collector's item. |
