1) You're getting an education 2) You're taking on debt in order to be able to earn greater income.... meaning debt you can handle. If you are so broke... why in the world don't you qualify for a bunch of grants? In my case it was because I made too much money waiting tables or tanding bar to qualify... but I got all the loans I needed... and many I didn't

So although I am taking on that debt to earn a better income I will probably end up still living paycheck to paycheck once I get that job for the next 10 years because I will have to pay off all of that debt. My complaint with Miles comment is that the people that are able to go to school to get that marketable skill, to get that better job, are going to still live near the poverty line once they do get that job because they will be having to pay that debt off. So basically you're fucked if you do and you're fucked if you don't I guess.

Not at all. You think you are going to be fucked 10 years from now? Or, do you think you'll better off than the person with no education still waiting tables or digging ditches?

so in the future, don't you think you'll be better off after the debt and the lifestyle getting there? you got 2 choices... better yourself now and prosper later or just punch a time clock now and keep doing it later and never prosper. i guess everybody expects immediate gratification. "i've just graduated... gimme my million dollars!"

And for the record, neither Miles nor I have degrees, yet we have marketable skills that pay well enough to enjoy comfortable lives. College does not guarantee success, nor does the lack of a degree guarantee failure. Learning a skill does not have to cost hundreds of thousands. Just because it's the method you chose for yourself, doesn't mean it's the only one, or even the right one for others.

experience affect perception..so i'll go out on a limb here and still assert that even with more and better equal access to education all men are indeed NOT equal when it comes to matters of the minds and skills, and even still then if that was the only determing factor in "making it"in life..what about all the OTHER people just as skilled/ qualified as you are...there are only so many spots in this system... that's all i'm saying, i don't want to get into an e-argument but all i'm stressing is look at the other sides to the issue. like me, they always say, oh andrea..youcan grow up and be whatever youwant to be, i NEVER ate that bullshit there are "catalytic : conditions out there that dictate down to most people how high/ low they are going to be able to move up / down in their particular social strata.

![]() | excellent point... as much as I adore the liberal arts there are hundreds of thousands of baristas who graduated w/BAs making minimum wage + tips with six figure debt in deferment.... if one is financing college on gov't subsidized loans it is a good idea to get a marketable education rather than study the literature of seventeeth century Hungary....

yeah... but if you talked about being a lit major you'd take even more ![]() the problem, imo, is financial aid. It has created a lot more access to colege - true. However, it has been the single most important factor in tuition increases. Additionally, see those baristas who can't pay for their degrees in seventeenth century Hungary literature. College is not a right, its not even a good idea for large numbers of people who go... fuck around and quit... or those lit majors for that matter.
