There's no excuse for poverty in the western world.

Yep, and you can always get a second job if you need too. If you should be working there is no excuse for not having at least one.

Taken from wiki:

The World Bank defines extreme poverty as living on less than US $1 per day, and moderate poverty as less than $2 a day, estimating that "in 2001, 1.1 billion people had consumption levels below $1 a day and 2.7 billion lived on less than $2 a day."
So yeah, if you are living in poverty in the U.S. than you are a loser.

The following are facts about persons defined as "poor" by the Census Bureau, taken from various government reports:

Forty-six percent of all poor households actually own their own homes.

The average home owned by persons classified as poor by the Census Bureau is a three-bedroom house with one-and-a-half baths, a garage, and a porch or patio.

Seventy-six percent of poor households have air conditioning.

By contrast, 30 years ago, only 36 percent of the entire U.S. population enjoyed air conditioning.

Only 6 percent of poor households are overcrowded. More than two-thirds have more than two rooms per person.

The average poor American has more living space than the average individual living in Paris, London, Vienna, Athens, and other cities throughout Europe. (These comparisons are to the average citizens in foreign countries, not to those classified as poor.)

Nearly three-quarters of poor households own a car; 30 percent own two or more cars.

Ninety-seven percent of poor households have a color television; over half own two or more color televisions.

Seventy-eight percent have a VCR or DVD player; 62 percent have cable or satellite TV reception.

Seventy-three percent own microwave ovens, more than half have a stereo, and a third have an automatic dishwasher.

poor means having less than your buddies....

how many "poor" kids do you know with Xbox 360s Wiis or other games that cost as much as (or more than) a dinner for Audri?

You mean -$150 and -$100? I've paid for the last few dinner dates I had, TYVM. I always pay if I'm the one doing the inviting, which is why I have zero problem expecting the same.

Get a better job then. If you're not qualified for said job, find a way to learn up and then get it. Go to school or learn a marketable skill, and don't take on financial responsibilities that you damn well know you aren't able to handle. It's that simple. You either do for yourself or you don't. Nobody said it would be easy. I feel zero sympathy for people who can't provide for themselves here.

12 hours a day at $5.20 an hour = 62.40 per day = 312 a week = 1352 a month on average.

I've subsisted on less.

And that's if said person makes minimum wage at both jobs. If that's the case, take a chunk of that work ethic and increase your earning potential, like Miles said.

From an article by George F Will... not so certain he came up with the rules but here they are... rules for avoiding poverty

Quote:
Graduate from high school, don't have a baby until you are married, don't marry while you are a teenager. Among people who obey those rules, poverty is minimal.
I think adding your "don't take on financial responsibilities you aren't prepared to handle would eliminate the risks in most cases excepting tragedy

And what do you have to say to those people that work two jobs and go to school full time and are putting themselves in mass amounts of debt to learn that marketable skill so they can get a better paying job?

I for one am putting myself in mad debt to graduate from college so I can get that job that I can comfortably survive on, and while putting myself through school.....not my parents, I have been working numerous jobs so I can keep myself afloat at the bare minimum.

Not everyone in the US is blessed to have parents that will send them to school for free, or that can get a full ride scholarship!
