Coworkers that treat you like ass

So... I'm the odd one out in my department at work. See, I don't listen to top 40 music, and I could give a rat's ass about celebrity gossip.

BUT..
I'm getting damn sick of being treated like an inept idiot because I don't jam out to Lifehouse, and don't go out of my way act like a complete cunt to anyone that doesn't look like they live in Plano.
Its just my department that is like this towards me. There are no such issues with anyone else anywhere in the building.


I'm getting really tired of being berated in front of customers over my coworkers' misconceptions (like I got bitched at for saying a band had a punk influence because in the mind of the supervisor, punk rock does not have any screaming, and it all should sound like Bowling for Soup), and I'm getting incredibly turned off about being bitched at because I'm actually nice to the customers (Yesterday, a customer had made a grievous mistake that we could not correct. I got lectured for saying "I'm sorry.")

The only problem is that it really doesn't matter where you go, you won't like someone or someone won't like you. It is BS though. I usually get flamed because I like "techno", but that's what happens when one works in a hardcore hip-hop environment, I guess. Anyway, I can't believe they'd berate you in front of customers just because you failed to pick up the latest Sum41 CD, what a bunch of jaded losers.

On an individual level, yes. No big thang.
A cliquish gang of elitists is a different story.

We had an unofficial work meeting at Heart Chakra with people from 3 different departments.... None of which were my department.

And really, its only like 3 of the people in the department that have a real attitude towards me, but since one is a supervisor, and another one is her sister, everyone follows their lead to kiss their butts and prevent themselves from being in the same situation as me.

Add to this......... They hired me with the intention of having me work in another department when it started because its a perfect match for my degree. That department has finally opened up). Instead of transferring me to that department, they have decided it is going to be a department of one and that I'm going to stay where I am, and off the clock give consulting services to the girl who is in that department (who does not have the degree that I am almost done with).

Who give a damn what kind of music you like. Tell your coworkers to shut the hell up. Is there life that boring that they have to research celebrity gossip? Ask them why are they involved in all the gossip?

That sucks cyberina ... I know that at my current day job I just hide what I do in my free time. It's easier than dealing with any office bs...

I don't discuss my free time with my coworkers even though in my work environment everyone freely discusses their drunken revelries.

They base their judgements on the following:
1) I don't know the words to the top 40 songs they blare in the office.
2) A ****LOT*** of people who know me come through there (customers, coworkers, bands, promoters, etc), and comment about stuff in general "Oh, that gig of yours the other day blah blah blah" "I heard that song you played last night, and blah blah blah"
3) Because we're open after midnight on Fridays, and before noon on Saturdays, they all know about Rocket Radio so that I won't be scheduled to work over the top of the show.
4) I'm not familiar with a lot of the actors and actresses they discuss in office downtime.


Other stuff like that.

Not officially, but there were 7 of us there. None of us were expecting to run into each other. Two of them have second jobs at a very nearby bar, which partially explains how their rocker selves wound up at the rave party. Two of the others, I wasn't surprised at all to see (and am actually surprised I hadn't seen out before then).
