So, one of my twins popped a good portion of the keys off my laptop a few weeks ago and lost the pieces that go underneath to reconnect them. I'd been putting off getting a new one because I've been broke, etc... but finally I couldn't stand it anymore and decide to look into having it replaced. So, I decide to take it up to Circuit City, where I bought it, for an estimate. I ask the uber dork at the counter to take a look at it and he says he'll have to call HP to find out how much the part is going to be, etc... and he'll call me back. Get a call from him about 30 minutes later saying he has good news and bad news. The good news is that the part is only $54. The bad news is that he's going to have to charge me $120 for two hours of labor because my laptop is especially difficult to get into.

Yeah, eff that.

So, I call a local guy who says if I'll order the part he'd do it for $80. Better, but still...so I found the keyboard on ebay for $47 including shipping and decide to try to do it myself. Took me 5 friggin minutes. Here are the complex, time consuming steps to replace the keyboard:

1) Remove battery
2) Unscrew 3 screws
3) Lift out keyboard
4) Pull out cable connecting keyboard to motherboard
5) Replace with cable to new keyboard
6) Slide new keyboard into place
7) Put screws back in

I'm tempted to go up there and bitch the guy out for trying to lie to me like that so he could make commission off of me. That's not right.

I pay 20$ to get my oil changed... /shrug
All you have to do for that is Step 1 drain oil. Step 2 add new oil.

Really its all about laziness. How much money are you willing to spend to not have to do work or learn something. Lots of things in life are relatively easy, but we are just to lazy to learn how to do them.

Computer shops prey on old grandma types, people that are frightened by technology.

There's a big difference between $20 and $120. I get the whole convenience thing, but the guy outright lied to me. It would have been overcharging to charge me even for one hour. Trying to charge for me two is downright fraudulent.

I'm actually glad I did it because now I'm over the intimidation factor of working on a laptop. I just didn't have any experience with them, but now I know how easy it is.

Step 2 add new oil. Really its all about laziness. How much money are you willing to spend to not have to do work or learn something.
