as a boss myself... i pay for my employees' phones because i expect to them to be in reach for work related shit. not bucking up for a phone that is being used for work is totally unethical and demeaning. they are basically stealing from you and you not talking to them about that means you don't have a backbone. you should find one.

that is, if you think they are getting more out of that 10 bucks a month than not. if not, then no problem.

My work hates that I won't set my blackberry up for my company email. I hate our company email, it's the most horrifically mismanaged Domino server on earth, and they don't pay for my phone at all. So they can suffer me only checking my email once a day until they either pay my phone bill or buy me a company computer. I tell them over and over, "if you need to reach me, use my gmail address," which does go to my phone, but they won't listen.

We are required to use our phone CONSTANTLY and we get fucking $25 a QUARTER. Assholes. We all hate it.

I actually got into trouble for not taking care of something that came in late Saturday afternoon even though I was out of town in Austin because they knew I have a Blackberry and saw the email. No one was even here to work on the shit in the first place!!!!!!!!! Fuck $25 a quarter!!!

It's a toss up for me. I hate that they can reach me all the time and know it, which they use to their advantage.

Still I deal with such high end work that costs so much money that I would rather feel good about being on top of everything rather than come into work in the morning to a bunch of bullshit I didn't expect. It also helps me "put out fires" over the weekend, which saves time and money, rather than everyone freaking out on a Monday morning.

Mine is the same way about the email. Well, the sales guy who runs the department(which is an awful string of 7 words to put together btw) was on my ass about it, but I don't want to be a slave to the phone. He also was all over me not dropping my home phone number and just using the work number. I told him the $60/month I pay for the right to a phone that has ZERO to do with work is worth every penny, and that when I leave work I LEAVE WORK. I'm not oncall, don't call me about crap that others can handle.

Of course they still do it sometimes, but since that guy was stripped of his power over the dept operations it happens a lot less.
