| Damn Electric Bill
Ok so last month I posted here about how high my electric bill was at $300.... Now this month its gone up to $380. I think there's gotta be something wrong because I don't think I use very much as I am never home. My friend told me that there might be something wrong with the meter. I live in a 1150sqft place and keep the thermostat at 74 degrees at all times. I use my washer and dryer maybe 2-3 times a week... should my bill be that high?

You keep it at 74 degrees ALL THE TIME? Even when you are not at home? That's your problem right there. In the past month, we have had 100+ degree days on a regular basis. No wonder it's gone up more. Yesterday I had my AC set at 77 degrees. It ran, and never turned off... just ran and ran for like 5 hours straight. I finally got it to turn off when I pushed it up to 79 degrees. Then I put a fan on me and went to sleep. I bet my electric bill goes up to $200 easy this month. Oh, and I'm in a 800 sq foot apartment, top floor. It's an older building though, and the AC unit looks old. |

Well when i leave for work in the morn I usually push it up to like 80... but then someone told me that by doing that it will take longer to cool it down in the afternoon, therefore using up more energy. I dunno, either way it's still outrageous. I'm on the ground level too so i just can't imagine it being that high. Over the last three months it has just gone higher and higher by like $80-$100 each time!

If you push it up to 90-95, then it will cost you more to cool down the place when you come home. | |

74 to 80 is a pretty excessive jump. Just try one degree at a time. We keep ours at 78 during the day because like Karen said, at 77 it runs constantly, and then at night we turn it down to 77 while we sleep (I'm pregnant and my body temp. is already a few degrees higher than usual, so I have to turn it down at night or I will die). Our bill last month was way higher than usual at $280 and we live in a 1500 sq. ft. house.

See that's what I mean, I know people that have two story houses that don't pay more than $300 and that's with TXU (which is the highest at 22 cents/KW) I'm with Stream Energy and pay 19 cents per KW so I just can't understand why there would be such a big difference. I'm starting to think there's gotta be something wrong here. Maybe the meter is fucked.

there are a shit ton of factors when trying to figure this stuff out. what's the efficiency rating of your unit? what floor do you live on? proper insulation? proper doors and windows? carpet? wood floors? gas or electric range? tv's/computers on? tall ceilings? electric water heater? rechargeable anal squirter being used too often? sorry, but these generic questions that have a million factors in them are not so cut and dry. life is hard yo.

I don't think it's the meter. It sounds a bit like you aren't being as conservative as you could be with your thermostat, if you don't mind my saying. I know it can feel stuffy in the house at 78 degrees, but it sure beats 105 outside!
