I have no idea. I just felt sorry for some of the gymnasts and for China. The announcers clearly knew some of the scoring was wrong, unfair, and biased and were talking about it on tv. I'm waiting for the news specials to come out afterwards so I can make a more informed decision, but it looks seriously fishy. That entire thing, takes away from what a bad ass job China did and is doing.

It wouldn't be the Olympics w/o some sort of drama. Name me an Olympics that didn't have some sort of misjudging, performance-enhancing drugs, terrorist, countries boycotting, etc related drama. |

Beijing should have never been allowed to host it with China's political and human rights record. Even besides that, the quality of the air within the main host city. The millions of people forced from their homes without compensation so China could build all of this crap. The lack of free press and freedom of information. The lack of freedom of religion. Or anything else the government does not sanction. The amount of citizens that are imprisoned or executed for simply protesting; or demanding payment for their home that was razed. It goes on and on. I'm tired of everyone ignoring that. They was a lot of to-do on the internet when the recent Tibet massacre was going on, but now everyone seems to have forgotten what happened just months ago. Instead, we'd rather ignore it and plop down on the couch and wait for Michael Phelps to swim or for some Brazilian chicas to play some beach volleyball. Might as well let someone like North Korea host it next.

Nice article touching on the IOC and its president, and China.... http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/bei...lgns&leadstory BEIJING — Jacques Rogge is so bought, so compromised, the president of the IOC doesn’t have the courage to criticize China for telling a decade of lies to land itself these Olympic Games. All the promises made to get these Games — on Tibet, Darfur, pollution, worker safety, freedom of expression, dissident rights — turned out to be phony, perhaps as phony as the Chinese gymnasts’ birthdates Rogge was way too slow to investigate. Also, http://www.reuters.com/article/topNe...0?feedType=RSS BEIJING (Reuters) - At least eight American blogger-activists and several other foreigners have been detained in Beijing as the government intensifies a crackdown on pro-Tibetan protests in the home stretch of the Olympics, rights groups said on Wednesday. Students for a Free Tibet earlier said authorities detained five self-styled "citizen journalists" who were in Beijing to promote Tibetan freedom on Tuesday. The New York-based group said activist-artist James Powderly had also been nabbed.

(China has denied all applications to protest in sanctioned "protest zones" .... lol) http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/21/sp...em&oref=slogin BEIJING — In the annals of people who have struggled against Communist Party rule, Wu Dianyuan and Wang Xiuying are unlikely to merit even a footnote. The two women, both in their late 70s, have never spoken out against China’s authoritarian government. Both walk with the help of a cane, and Ms. Wang is blind in one eye. Their grievance, receiving insufficient compensation when their homes were seized for redevelopment, is perhaps the most common complaint among Chinese displaced during the country’s long streak of fast economic growth. But the Beijing police still sentenced the two women to an extrajudicial term of “re-education through labor” this week for applying to hold a legal protest in a designated area in Beijing, where officials promised that Chinese could hold demonstrations during the Olympic Games. |
