| having to work all night - good ol IT jobs
So last night at 10PM, I planned to reset my servers to troubleshoot an exsisting issue. After rebooting, the applications failed to work correctly. I called support to open a ticket. Almost 10 hours later, I am still working with support to get this issue fixed. Because we have agents logging into these applications, it is deemed as a critical issue and we are now losing money because our agents cannot log in as of 7AM. I have managers, directors, and the VP asking me when it will be up. Very frustrating. To any of you that think you might want to start a career in the IT world, let it be known, you could be working at any given time. This type of work is definitely great for the husband who hates being at home with the wife. LOL |

it isn't that bad. You might be on call all the time but if you set it up right you can remote in, that way you can work from home. The only thing you ever have to go into work for is to press the restart button or maybe change a CD. I would hate to do IT because the people you support are not that good with computers. So basically the only things you interact with are computers and dumb people. It makes for a pretty stressful life. |

clay donkey, I remote in with my notebook using VPN. I was working from home all night. When morning came I decided to come in as we had to have some meetings to decide how to handle the situation and come up with a fallback plan. The servers are still down as I type this so it's making for a pretty chaotic morning so far. Luckily management is taking it rather well and they understand shit happens. I've received several kudos for making this my #1 priority. Sometimes it sucks but it's what we live for, ya know? |

This is a predictive dialer system and there's a ton of applications spread out over 5 servers. I'm hoping a restore is not the answer to this issue. | |

| I am supporting an Aspect EnsemblePro predictive dialer. We are a blended environment meaning we take both inbound and outbound calls. I support all of the applications (Campaigns, Reporting, IVR, Gateway configuration, Real-Time Monitoring, etc.) It's a helluva job and I'm always working but I love it!

I feel you Tekmoe. I had the same shit happen to me a couple of years ago. Everything was working great and one night we decide to upgrade to a new Service Pack. Restart and the damn Application Server kept crashing. Memory was being eaten up and the JVM was super unstable. I had to keep restarting the damn thing every night around midnight. We had 3 consultants come out and look at it and they couldn't figure it out. Turns out my co-worker had reset a conditional flag in one of the config files from False to True. That little thing fucked us for 3 months!

Man, we had a person resign in June and there are three of us including our boss so with the third person missing, the other person and I had to spread ourselves out for coverage until our new hired person is fully trained. Bleh...this whole summer I've been working 7 days straight or 14 days straight...so I feel ya.
