| one education and a side of better life please. Hold the Debt.
So... here i am working my ass off and scraping up as much change as i can to try and pay for an education that i cant afford. scholarships, federal grants, and loans just don't cut it. i'm still in the hole for last semesters tuition, but even after paying that off the question of 'how am i going to pay for the rest of this?' is still in my mind. im stuck in that middle zone of not poor enough to recieve maximum government aid, but not rich enough to just be able to pay it and not worry.i have good grades, and im a minority so why don't i get more free money from the state or government than just this measly 2.5 grand? Get a loan? no fucking way. I have a cousin with medical school debt over 60,000 dollars from federal loans. Her job teaching at a private university, even with full certification, is barely helping her to pay it off. with fees and interest she anticipates paying off about 140-180 grand in the end. She loves her teaching and doesn't want to leave it for a higher paying job at a hospital or private clinic. it looks like if she doesn't want to spend the rest of her life in debt she may have to sacrifice what she loves doing. thank God i got an early warning and didn't fall into those dismal traps of predatory banks and loan sharks taking advantage of young naieve people. And this is suppost to be the reward of higher education? Why should anyone have to go into slavery to collection firms like that just because they want a shot at a better life? it seems to me like the whole thing is set up to fling honest, hard working people into deep debt and allow universities and collection agencies an opportunity to make a huge profit.

She went to med school and teaches? Isn't the idea of med school is to be a Doctor. Once you are a Dr. you make mad cash and pay off those loans. But higher education can be a rip off. I'm paying $1100 to take a class on culture in the workplace, just to get my Masters degree. |

Although, a lot of people make this mistake. They pay way too much for a degree in something that won't make them a lot of money to pay off all the loans for that degree. But schools rip off people in a way by charging so much to get a degree in something where the pay scale is very low. Too bad they can't have a sliding tuition scale based on your degree and the potential that degree has.

Its because universities can charge that much. You think its worth it for some reason, and other people do too. Its simple supply and demand because schools are no longer about education. They are about making money. Doctors don't make mad cash like you think. They have to play games with patents and insurance companies and if they are lucky they can squeek by. It takes like 10 years as a doctor before you live comfortably. And fuck you being a minority. What does that have to do with anything? If you got straight A's you would get a money just like anyone else of any color. What's the point in handing out money so you can get a C or B average just because you are brown. Fuck that! |

If I put my Grad school tuition on a loan, it would be around $12,000. I had a credit card at one time with $24,000 on it (paid off now)... I have a car loan right now for $9,000. A $10,000-$15,000 loan for school, isn't that much. Really. AND when it comes down to it, getting an education at a state funded school is way cheaper than going the private/online school route.

i just havent seen any of it, really. by all means i dont feel that my race entitles me to anything, but i do think that many minorities generally get the shit end of the stick when it comes to the public education system. if you dont believe me, go to a highschool in lancaster or south Oak cliff. also you have to consider that the median income for blacks, hispanics is lower. lets face it, parents cant pay for college when they are struggling to put food on the table and pay rent. i did get straight A's at my first semester of freshman year when i was at Stephen F. Austin (not really that big of an accomplishment considering their shitty curriculum). and i got offered a private scholarship through the school for a WHOPPING 1200.

No I believe you that minority based schools are kind of crappy. There is money out there you just have too look. It take a lot of time to apply to them all. 1200$ is nothing to scoff at. It all depends on what school you go to. If its a private school maybe you should have gone to an instate land grant college. Its typically cheaper.
