![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Getting special allowances in the workplace
All right... we all have that situation at work. There is that one person (or few people?) who gets special allowances in the workplace. Now, I know many of you on here are smokers. Smokers typically get smoke breaks on the job. They get to stand around for 15-20 minutes 3 or 4 times a day to smoke. Where non smokers don't do it. I know non smokers always make the joke about taking up smoking so they too can get a break. We don't really have that scenario in my office, because none of us smoke. I do that I need to have a baby though, so I can work from home. This one coworker here gets to work from home because her baby is teething. Must be nice. If I had a kid I could do that, but no kid, so I have to be at work daily. How long does a kid teeth for exactly? Months? So for months she will have the "I need to work from home my kid is crying" excuse. After that it will be "my baby is sick". Obviously I won't have a kid just to get a special allowance... but I don't know how many times I have heard people talk about how people with kids get special allowances just because of the kids. Single people without kids get to work later shifts, etc. I know having a kid is a challenge. Mind you, she is not a single parent and she has the support of both her parents and her husband's parents... but I think that it's a little annoying that she gets to work from home because her kid is teething and she didn't want her Mom to watch the kid today. OK, flame away. I'm sure many of the people with kids will get on here and be all pissed off at me for not being understanding of their situation... but what the hell... DDM loves drama and this will keep a few people entertained today.

I have no kids and I am a smoker. I MIGHT take one break in the afternoon for a smoke, other than that I'm at my desk. I'm assuming since you're posting this you're not one of those "Talkers." You know the people who walk to others cubicles and talk for 10 minutes, if you are you should just delete this thread right now, if not, continue reading. The people who make those "excuses" and yes they are excuses, even if the baby is teething, etc, won't be the ones to move up in the company as fast as everyone else. You think upper management likes to hear that crap? Meanwhile who's in the office, not complaining, doing the work? You are. IMO, they're doing you a favor by making you look better. |

It's happened a few times now and her kid just started teething. Maybe it's been going on a month. Really, how long do kids teeth for? Just looks like a pattern to me. PS- there have been other "kid excuses" before this even. AND the kid is only 6 months old.

It's just gotten a bit annoying... all the "I need to stay at home" with my kid excuses. That's all. How do women who don't have the luxery of support from family, and a husband make it to work every day? I have no clue. Being a single Mom with a teething kid must suck. Even more reason to never have a kid.

Nah, she's making excuses. Teething kids suck and all, but it's no reason to stay home from work. I'm usually 100% behind parents and all, but that's ridiculous. My daughter went to daycare when she was teething, and while I'm sure it was a little more trouble for her teachers, it's just part of dealing with babies. It sounds like your co-worker has found out that a baby is a great excuse to get out of just about everything.

![]() | Then like I said earlier, you're looking like a better employee every day she stays home. Give us an update in 6 months on whether that lady is still working there. Quote:

um, yeah i do think you would complain about it the first time lol. if she's got the vacation/sick time to spare, you've really got no room to bitch. and if she's in a crappy situation where her kid is having some developmental issues, that sounds like a huge bummer for her bc i bet she's well aware of how it looks to upper management and the rest of the office. and if she's just lying, well it will come back to bite her in the ass soon enough.

every kid is different... whatever it is im sure she has talked about it with upper management. it sucks if you are actually taking up for her workload but thats kinda just the way it works. most people have kids and kids need all sorts of attention... ive always viewed this as 'give and take' since at some point ill be in the same boat
