Fucking banks. Ugh!

So, today I checked my account and I was charged an NSF fee for a check that went through the same day of my direct deposit. My account was never in the red at any point because my direct deposit goes through first thing in the morning. The customer service bitch told me that they actually ran the check before the deposit even though the deposit hit the account first because the check had been written on a previous date, even though it was not deposited until that day.

I argued with her and then told her I'm just going to go cancel my account because this is total bullshit. I thought it wasn't legal for them to pull this shit anymore. I get that I shouldn't have cut it that close, but this doesn't seem right.

If the deposit was made the day before, it doesn't get credited to your account till the nightly run despite them making it look like you have the funds.

Also, debts, largest to smallest, are run through prior to credits simply to increase the probability of you posing NSF fees. Every bank runs them that way. Sorry to hear about your luck.

It was just one large withdrawal that put me in the red, but they put that one first, and took smaller ones from up to three days before and reordered them to charge me a hundred and twenty fucking bucks. When I called them, of course, it must have been my fault for not having any proof.

talk to the bank manager and see if they'll overturn it

if they don't and you threaten to cancel they won't care. banks don't value customers who have free checking accounts because they don't make any money off you. you can forget about receiving good customer service. sucks but that's the way it is.

your online balance doesnt necessarily reflect your account

they will pend your deposit just like they will pend a charge at a bar

Yep. That one's happened to me before as well. I've been tempted just to not have a bank account at all because of this bullshit, but cashing checks is too much of a pain in the ass.

It's sounds like you should complain to whoever held on to your check and waited to deposit it.. although, it doesn't matter because you are obligated to that debt, regardless of when they decide to deposit the check.

Also.. your deposit may only show as a 'memo post' which technically, the funds aren't available.. it just shows that there is a deposit of some sort in the pipeline - it could be an automatic payroll deposit, could be a check that you deposited in the drive thru earlier that morning.. who knows.

I've never had direct deposit for this very reason. I like to have the physical check in my hand, so I know when it is deposited and at what moment..

...and to keep myself out of trouble, I've also never paid for or bought something when knowing that the funds aren't yet available to cover that purchase/serivce.

I dont understand(and im not being sarcastic here) why people still use checks?

Like seriously. I do not have one bill, expense, item etc etc I cant just use my Debit or a C.C.(which is paid in full every month). If people dont have credit cards...thats fine, but dont ALL bank now a days offer ATM/Debit cards with some kind of logo attached to it(M.C, Visa etc)

Most people don't take debit cards, and neither do schools.

Yeah, the only thing I can't put on a card is my rent. It's easier to grab a cashier's check at the bank once a month than to have to deal with a checkbook.
