For medications. All these crazy side effects if you stop taking a medication, make it seem kind of pointless. What if you wind up not liking how the medication makes you feel, but you're trapped and can't stop taking it in fear that you'll act like King Coo Coo?

Do any of you guys have experience with this?

Well nothing yet.. but my doctor prescribed a medicine to help me focus more during the day, and help me sleep better at night. I read up on it and there's a chance of suicidal tendencies if you stop taking it. LOL

my philosophy is that if you are having a hard time focusing on something then that something is boring as shit and you should be doing something more exciting.

Before you go taking something permanent like that, try just taking some regular, plain old Omega-3s.

1000 - 2000 mg of fish oil with a high level of DHA has been studied to do many of the same things this medication you're talking about boasts... withOUT the side effects. AND you'll have the added bonus of better heart health, too!

Look for a bottle that says molecularly distilled. That's important, so you don't get any mercury in there, too. It also keeps you from burping up fishy taste. Also read the side to make sure it shows how much EPA and DHA are in one dose. Crappy brands don't tell you how much of each component are in there. You want one that is high in DHA, as that's the part of the fish oil related to neural health.

I have a terrible memory, and during the day I cannot focus very well. I feel my brain is slow and isn't functioning at the capacity it potentially could. It affects my work when I cannot focus. I also have problems sleeping. He prescribed something that he said would help, but didn't give me a whole lot of information about it. I'm researching it myself and the side effects make it seem terribly NOT worth it. But I asked around on yahoo answers and most people who take it find that it helps them quite a bit. Just thought I'd ask you guys too since I know most of you better than random yahoo peoples.

Hey thanks... But one would think doctors would suggest this before some psychoactive medication.

Matt? Thoughts? Are all doctors just going to try to prescribe you what they're pushing or should I see a wholistic doctor first?

No problem...

And no worries about talking to a holistic doctor specifically. Just about any doctor who has read up on current research can talk to you about Omega 3s. Its not a hippy thing in this case. In fact, not that it matters, but I'm not a fan of holistic doctors myself... I tend to prefer DOs over MDs, though. Also.. I tend to not refer people to things that are out of the box because they usually lack sound medical research.. Unless of course they are asking specifically about the out of the box type treatments.

I have no idea why more doctors don't suggest Omega 3s to people right off the bat for appropriate issues. One could speculate and project a million reasons behind that, but I know there are a great that do in fact recommend Omega 3s.

IMHO, though, its always good to try appropriate and standard vitamins and supplements before going to prescription medications. (Assuming, of course, your situation isn't too threatening to afford the time for such experimentation)

The reasoning? MANY things are treatable with standard and well tested vitamins and supplements (like A, C, E, probiotics, omega 3s, omega 6s, omega 9s), and its generally less expensive. Not to mention, MANY (but not all) medications end up "teaching" your body to be dependent on a pill whereas the vitamins and supplements tend to help your body fix itself and be dependent entirely on its own natural processes. (there are exceptions on both sides of that.. I'm speaking extremely generally)

If you find the vitamins/supplements aren't effective enough, THEN go to prescription meds.

Vitamins and supplements don't fix everything, but its definitely worth a shot. I've seen Omega 3s drop someone's blood pressure 40 points, and I've seen them help someone with ADHD get off of Ritalin/Aterol effectively.
