I don't really think it makes a difference if they are asking a man or a woman. Still, giving homeless people change is enabling and it shouldn't be done.

Giving change to homeless people isn't keeping them on the street, it's just making an unbearable situation a little easier. I'd still rather give them practical stuff, like the guy I gave a rod and reel to last month, or blankets in the winter.

you are right. change doesn't keep them on the street. extreme personal problems & high drama keep them on the street. they are denial that they can & should make a change.

giving them a fishing rod or blanket is humane and admirable. but no cash no how, not even change. money does not fall out of the sky, even if you have been under a rock.

You left mental illness out of that - a lot of homeless folks aren't lazy, they're extreme bipolars, schizophrenics, autism spectrum disorders, severe alcoholics, or have a host of other physical or mental illnesses. These people can't just up and decide to change their lives, no matter how much they may want to. Since society hasn't decided that homelessness is a problem worth fixing, I do what I can for folks without endangering my own ability to provide for me and mine.

I don't know if y'all have ever been on the street, but it fucking sucks. There's nothing more dehumanizing than getting shit on constantly and never knowing where your next meal is coming from. Anybody that has the ability to get off the street will find a way (gutter punks excepted, but I don't give them anything), so the folks that are left are the ones that really need help the most.

mental illness is a huge part of it. i wrote a college essay about how the cost of psychotropic maintenance drugs is a factor in causing homelessness.

i understand where you are coming from.

my first job in high school was interning at social security in the summer. i cleaned out files that hadn't been active in over 7 years. most of these ppl were mentally ill and eligible for ssi money but couldn't keep an address to receive their check. most of the files i 'cleaned' were homeless ppl that couldn't be found. it was a depressing thing to realize for a 16 year old.

especially when my boss told me that the feds quit paying the bill for lifetime institionalizations (staying in the hospital for good). so when benefits ran out in the 80's, many funny farm patients were dropped off at the greyhound station closest to where they came from (sometimes decades later). it is no accident that bus stations have lots of mentally ill hanging out.

but where I'm coming from now, i write grants for homeless shelters on a regular basis and understand how life skills training (hygeine, job skills, etc) are as important as learning to live on a budget.

have you ever known a friend to become homeless? cause you will have all new perspective the first time one of your party buddies comes up to you on the street panhandling & you know by the smell & blanked out expression that it isn't a joke.

& i understand now as a grown up that we all have to take responsibility for ourselves. if we really want them to do better we have to get them to take care of themselves not learn who to ask for change.

i'm thinking long term. but i think big.

i know mental illness is an issue. but its going to take an overhaul of the health care system to really take care of those people. until then they are going to sleep in shelters & jails during bad weather & camp in the trinity forest the rest of the time.

and just because someone is begging, doesn't mean they are homeless.

I get hit up all the damned time by ppl that are fairly clean and look like they have a roof over their head.

Just 2 days ago some fucker hit me up INSIDE the store I was in. I just said "I have my own problems" and walked off...

After spending the morning in the sun working on my busted car, I was in no mood to hear someone else's "woe unto me" story.
