I'll add not having any heat in my house. How it works on Crete is that you have wall hung a/c units (which work very well and save a lot of energy) in each room and then heaters on the floor. The heaters are diesel powered and you have to fill up your tank, usually located in the garage, every year. Being American citizens we are eligible to use a special form that gets us a discount (most things here have 19% sales tax on them). It's getting fucking cold here, so we call a guy on Monday to set up an appointment for him to come fill it. He calls last night and tells us he's ready to go but he needs an electric bill. We don't have an electric bill because the companies here bill every three months and we've only been in our house two. So now we have to get the housing dept. involved on base to get the account number he needs off the bill, which probably means we'll get the fuel sometime next June or July.

And firewood? Firewood you say? They don't have firewood at the grocery stores. I hunted for it all day on Saturday, in the rain and Cretan traffic and couldn't find any. I'm having my land lord have a guy come and bring 500k of it by this weekend, hopefully.

We had dinner at a nice steakhouse run by a Canadian transplant this past weekend for Stacy's bday (super pimp ass place). We got into a conversation with him and he's been here for over 15 years, and loves it obviously, but he was even bitching about just every day quality of life stuff and said that everyone complains about it. It's like you have to know someone to get anything around here. Fucking bullshit.

It's all gee. I love it here in spite of those things. It's just a matter of getting into the groove of another culture. We're getting it. After getting our household goods this place is really starting to feel like home.

And yes, the wind here is ridiculous. Like they have to shut the ports down on some days because it's so bad. It's moved my grill around overnight on the patio before. The ocean surrounding Crete is very cold too. Like the water stays between 70 and 80 degrees during the hottest months. I don't see how people even swim in it. It might be warmer on the south coast. The breeze coming off of it is what keeps it in the 80's/low 90's for the most part during the summers, but damn it makes it cold during the winter. It's still up and down here though. Like it's sunny and nice right now. I have my screen doors open at the moment.
