![]() | Cashing in vs Selling out
So many people call actors and artists sellouts when their music is featured in a commercial or they plug a product. I think that someone giving the rights to their music for use in a commercial is simply cashing in. Musicians make music as their job - to get paid. Also, when an artists plugs a product, company or cause that they personally believe in (or it's at least believable that they could be affiliated with it) then that is just them getting paid for something they already do (cashing in). For instance, when Tiger Woods plugs Nike or so-and-so newbie artist lets Old Navy use their song in a sweater commercial - that is ok by me. However, when Gwen Stefani attempts to draw a connection between Hewlit-Packard and creativity or Beyonce wants to upgrade me to Direct TV so much that she makes a stupid cheesy commercial out of it, I think that is selling out. They're strictly doing that for the money and/or to promote themselves. They're not using any of their talent or skill, hence they're just selling the product on the fact that they're famous or hot and don't necessarily even care about what they're selling. So, I've come to realize that there is a fine line between cashing in and selling out. What do you think the distinction is? |

The whole selling out thing is just jealousy from the less talented and hard working. If I could make a million bucks shilling for Pepsi, you'd be seeing me on TV right now.

The other day I heard a Badly Drawn Boy song on a Starbucks commercial. That's cool. Devendra Banhart put the song 'Little Boys' on his last album specifically so Starbucks wouldn't carry it. That's cool too. I don't really care either way. I'm not gonna stop liking an artist simply because they sold their song rights to be used in a commercial. They have whole websites dedicated to finding out what song/artist was on a commercial. I'm sure artists really like that because it gives people a chance to be exposed to more of said artists music. And besides...for all we know they could be sending that "selling out" $$$ to charity.

The fact is that record labels are using television as a method of marketing new musicians... shows like Grey's Anotomy, iPod commercials, Target commercials etc etc... | |
