![]() | Xain, San Pedro Recommendations..........
I highly recommend you make reservations (needed) and take a water taxi out to The Capricorn for dinner one night. http://www.capricornresort.net/eating.php Best food in Belize, wonderful staff and environment. I recommend the Jerk Chicken at JamBel's. For really good local food with good portions at local prices I recommend The Reef. You will get stuck with a tourist tab and food at Fido's, but the nightlife can be fun. I recommend the local music and nightlife at Sharky's (this bar changes names, but its the bar out on the water with the resident sharks swimming around. Usually has decent local bands playing Reggae/Punta music. Great place to mingle with locals and travelers/divers. I recommend renting some bikes, not just golf carts, and exploring the rest of the island. Head back towards the bay into San Juan, San Pedrito and get a good feel for how/where the locals live. I recommend finding local guides in the back bay area for fishing. Better prices and better local guides who will get you what ever you need for your festivities as well. Don't be afraid of the Lion's Club Barbecue off the street vendors either. Things to be aware of: Don't drink the water (obviously) Use bottled water for brushing teeth as well If you give someone money to go and get you something, don't expect him to come back. Since the introduction of crack to SP in the late nineties, violence among local youth has increased. Most of this is never seen by travelers and remains in the back of the island, but be aware. If a local is bothering you or your lady, don't be afraid to tell them to fuck off. Passiveness usually just gets perceived as weakness there. Brush up on your Garifuna and creole phrases if you must. The chicken drop is rigged. Stock up at the local liquor store on Belikin Beer and One Barrel (local coconut rum) I highly recommend any of the day trips offered were you take off in the morning, fish, pull up to a remote island, eat the fish you just got, and spend the afternoon snorkeling/diving. All of the day trips into the mainland are good. Mayan ruins are beautiful, cave tubbing is a blast and the Menonite villages will trip you out. Go snorkel shark-ray alley. Anyone who has any fear of sharks with come back a new person. you better Belize it mon! |

Most definetly will be snorkling shark-ray alley... last time we had very high water that came over the reef which, of course, created nasty current back out through the alley into the Carribean.. hopefully it'll be more calm this time. We're staying, I think, at Ramon's again. I want to get some reef fishing in... other than that... drinking... and eating.. in that order... I'll check the and and restaurant.. THANK YOU!!!!

so... tell me about Sharky's? Where is it? Its just so easy to sit at Ramons... plus we'll have a beach side unit and spend some time sitting on our asses drinking beers on the porch listening to the waves, the phones not ringing and the babies not crying.... back bay fishing... is that fishing on the flats for tarpon? Not so certain my casting is up to snuff for that. Or are you referring to something else? Would you recommend it over fishing the reef? Because I'm hoping to catch something nice bring it back to Ramons and have the cook serve it up... ought to be great fun |

As far as fishing goes, whether you want to reef fish or bay fish, I am just recommending getting a guide from the docks on the back bay area, not from a guide service in town. You will save a little money. But if you got a bigger, higher maintenance group that wants to fish, get a guide out of the San Pedro Yacht Club (more expensive, but great guides, and bigger, nicer boats) They can still pick you up at your hotel and bring the fish back to Ramon's for cooking. I have been out reef fishing and have come back and had Ramon's kitchen cook up my catch. (feakin awsome) They did the fish up three different ways with all these sauces. It doesn't get any fresher. But yea, Reef fish/bay fish if you want a nice meal. If you feel real brave, just rent a kayak and paddle out to the reef with a rod and real yourself Just watch out for the sharks on your stringer of fish. There is an outside grill next to Ramons (I forget the name) that has the best bbq in town.

cool... not so worried about saving $$$... in relative terms its pretty affordable so I'm going to be interested in a big comfy boat .. I think Ramon's may offer fishing guides.. or at least hook their guest up with one.. yeah, pun intended kayak .. yeah, not quite ready to go do that .. maybe next trip, sounds pretty cool though I will definetly check out the bbq.... have any good rum recommendations? never been much of a fan but when in Rome... or San pedro as the case may be...
